Today it seems everything is either already networked, or will be soon. Methods originally used to hook up office printers are now being applied to cars, wearable devices, building sensors and security systems and ... you name it. As more devices are added, we find ourselves questioning whether we are taking adequate security measures, using appropriate access control and privacy methods, and properly defining who owns the data. Can the Internet of Things be secure? The impact on privacy and data control with Mark O'Neill , Dan Blum and Jonathan Rodriguez https://www.oasis-open.org/events/Hangout5-27-2014

A Chinese farmer has invented a combined suitcase/scooter. It can carry two passengers, although I wonder how you'd decide how much clothing etc each person would have especially as it weighs 15lb when empty. Better to have one each! The scooter case can cover distances of up to 37 miles and maintain a speed of 12mph. See here for further information on City Cab as its being dubbed. Can you see yourself using one of these to your local airport? It would be handy at the other end if there's long queques for the taxis.
Due to unforseen circumstances, the talk originally advertised for June 19th has been cancelled. Watch this space to see if a replacement speaker can be set up in time.
On the 16 th May a number of IET members and their guests once again met at the Beeldes Lake golf centre for the 2014 annual Brush/Erikson IET golf competition. As usual, the weather was pleasant – in fact probably the best day of the year so far and the course was in great condition. The event followed the usual format; meet up for coffee and bacon roles, then 18 holes, full handicap Stableford – with prizes for: nearest the pin (Chris Price [senior member]), longest drive (Craig Rice [Member]), best guest score (Mike Hayward [38]), best Senior Member score (Chris Price [31]) and best Member score (Craig Rice [38]). Additionally this year, Craig Rice kindly donated a lovely sports jacket for the overall winner – which was awarded to Mike Hayward with his score of 38 points. As has been the…

The IET Faraday Challenge Days are cross-curricular activity days covering Science, Design and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). They have been held at schools and colleges around the UK for a number of years and have proved to be enormously popular with teachers and students alike. It is through its charitable arm of the IET that we are able to provide the Faraday Challenge Days at no charge to Hong Kong schools starting in 2014. The Faraday Challenge Days give students the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems. The event will be set up and run by our team of STEM professionals to give you the time to focus on your students. It is an unbeatable opportunity to switch your students on to the subject you love. We are now looking…

A veritable “perfect storm” of challenges and opportunities is profoundly changing the fundamentals of urban areas throughout the world. The driving force is the exploding growth of urban populations caused by both global population growth combined with dramatic relocation to urban centers. The United Nations predicts a near doubling of city dwellers by 2050 as the global population increases from 7 billion to 9 billion with the urban population to grow between 2.5 billion and 3 billion people in the next 30 years. This poses daunting challenges for planning, deployment, operations, and management of infrastructure, procurement and utilization of resources and provision of services. Within each urban area, it becomes more difficult to procure and manage the necessities of life and business…
