Robots & Industry 4.0 (IET London Network)

The theme for this year’s blog was field based devices, and throughout the year all the seminars, lectures and events attended has had an embedded trend towards smart enablement - beyond just smart device integration. We are starting to see the foundations of industry 4.0 shaping not only industries, but now digital economies too, block chain technology is now being built into most ecosystems as standard making the Industry 4.0 journey more acceptable. 2019 will more than likely continue the trend of industry 4.0 and how all our smart devices will integrate our day to day lives into new ecosystems. To see where the yellow brick road of Industry 4.0 might lead us in 2019, you'll need to navigate to the IET London Network's portal (link below) to see what was discussed at this year’s xmas lecture…

    McLaren's Superfast Cars (IET Surrey)

Neil Johnston, CEO & Founder of Vector Suite demonstrated, at the University of Surrey, how using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) initial design concepts are now being created in half the time. He showed how in minutes, using VR & VR headsets and controllers, he could create a brand new car design not only from the outside (2D) but also using VR he could sit inside the car and design its interior too. The platform demonstrated allows you to draw in 2D and 3D in real time - he described it like ' laying down wires in space ' as he created the car's body.  Speaking with Neil, I asked him his thoughts on how AR and VR might be impacted by Cyber Security, we discussed how security by design will become as important as innovation itself. During the session, he mentioned that Toy…

  • Game Changer Awards 2018

    Game Changer Awards 2018

Last Saturday, Game Changer Awards brought together bright, young innovators from Years 3 to 10 from across Perth and beyond in the hope of inspiring STEM in WA schools. At the event, the students got the chance to present and show off their creative STEM-powered solutions to real-world problems. On the day, several of our very own IET members joined other volunteers to help ensure tables were set up, teachers and students knew where to go, and the entire event ran as smoothly as possible. As a judge volunteer myself, I got to see the Year 3/4 STEM projects up close and was amazed at some of the ideas and creativity of their projects. It was especially interesting to see how they used the application of STEM in their proposed solutions. One project that stood out was an augmented walking stick…

    IET Sussex Network STEM Activities

Things are always quiet on the STEM front during the Autumn term. I guess the children are finding their feet in their new year group and before they know it they are preparing for the Christmas activities. The schedule of events doesn't really seem to start picking up until the spring, once potential bad weather has passed. The Sussex Network are fairly active in their support of STEM events. Over the past few years we've attended about a dozen events each year, consisting of either STEM fairs, often referred to as 'Big Bang' or 'STEMFest', or workshops in schools. The Big Bang events attract groups of students from a variety of schools, spread throughout the day and are either local events ('Big Ban @ Somewhere' and 'STEMFest Elsewhere') or Big Bang South East, run over two days and attracting…

North Yorkshire LN supports Engineering Extravaganza

On 6th November North Yorkshire LN supported the Engineering Extravaganza at the National Stem Centre in York. The IET was one of four PEIs at the event again this year. The challenge set for the children from 4 schools was to design and test a parachute for a Mars Rover lander. The parachutes were made with simple materials and descents timed with a Microbit. The event generated a lot of interest and competition between teams, and great fun was had by all.

  • Impact Of The 18th Addition Of The IET Wiring Regulations (IET London Network - Savoy Place).

Impact Of The 18th Addition Of The IET Wiring Regulations (IET London Network - Savoy Place).

So let’s think this through... You probably have multiple smart devices you interact with daily - they are only as good as the battery life of the device, so you need to plug in and charge up. The more things we plug in, the more electricity that is drawn. That’s fine for USB style devices (most IoT devices), but it seems like industry 4.0 is driving the use of technology beyond just smart entertainment. Car manufacturers are finally ready to team up with software houses to build the next electric vehicle within their traditional car plants, or some disruptors/challengers are ready to sell their white label solutions to car manufactures. Either way, smart devices are augmenting their needs into traditional manufacturing services which means the risk appetite for the use of electrical components…

Topical Event - Artifical Intelligence: The Inside Story

On Halloween, IET WA hosted the first of a series of topical presentations on a subject that has until now been shrouded in mystery and mathematical horror. Artificial Intelligence: The Inside Story.Hi, I’m Ashleigh, one of the presenters, who along with my co-presenter Dr Walter Green delivered a seminar that provided insight into the mysteries of AI and its wider implications to engineers and society as a whole. The goal of this seminar was to bring together students and professionals both young and old, to deliver some real understanding on a topic that is often daunting to behold. We also wanted to bring these students and professionals together for an evening of networking, giving them the opportunity to talk to others with similar interests. You didn’t have to be involved with the IET…
