  • Buckinghamshire New University - IET LN Student Prize

    Sam Smith, a graduate of Buckinghamshire New University, has been awarded the 2018 IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Student Prize. Sam Smith received his prize of £250 immediately after 4th September ceremony where he received his degree.  Andrew Dodd of the IET Buckinghamshire Local Network Committee handed over the cheque and a certificate summarising the reason for giving the prize to Sam.  Sam received the prize on the recommendations from his tutors, including Senior Lecturer Rafid Al-Khannak.  Sam had an excellent and consistently high standard of work throughout his studies and academic performance on his course “BSc (Hons) Computing and Web Development”, including his outstanding Project.     I love the reaction I get when I tell people I have a degree in engineering. As only around 11% of the UK engineering population are women, I feel I am part of a unique group of professionals.   Graduating in 2001 from the James Watt Engineering School at Glasgow University, I have always been keen to see how things work and figure out ways of making things better. I excelled in maths, science and art at school, so I knew I had a natural calling to pursue a STEM degree. Building, making, sketching and inventing was part of my everyday as a child. I now reflect and think how dull my childhood would have been, if I didn’t build those tree swings, go-carts and pulley systems!   • Catching Up With Nova Team

    Electric Motorcycle team Nova Racing at Assen 2018  Finally, after a few months of trying, a few weeks ago we managed to catch up with the 2017 Nova Racing team at the MotoE championship in Assen, The team were joint winners of the IET ARTS TPN MotoE prize of technical excellence during the 2017 season, along with Bath University Zero team. Floris Straver the 2017 team manager commented:   "We are so pleased that the hard work of Nova Electric Racing Team 08 (2017) resulted in the championship win, and now also is being awarded by the IET through the price for Technical Excellence.     Step into Tech is a new social enterprise founded in November 2016 to make sure we are doing all we can to help all our children reach their full tech potential. Our steering group brings together parents, educators, employers and tech specialists.Existing initiatives to help children get involved with technology tend to focus on narrow age ranges, and on coding rather than the wider world of technology. Many are targeted at schools rather than involving parents/carers.   • Fibre To The Home: A New Supplier Perspective (IET London - Hammersmith Evening Lecture).

    Tom Williams the Chief Operating Officer and Tony Mitchell the Network Director of Hyperoptic gave a technical account on some of the challenges Hyperoptic have overcome over the years. The typical last mile challenge is a key differentiator for Hyperoptic, whose end to end edge services can deliver 30MB, 150MB or 1GB full fibre. They spoke about how GPON architecture can be used to service ' not spots ' making sure the service-area can achieve its economic potential. The Hyperoptic technology proposition is very simple which complements their ability to scale fibre services. In 2002, I researched how to optimise and extend satellite engineering knowledge to provide VOIP over residential carrier grade network, specifically using the DECT protocol.     Dr Hao Li, Director of Vision and Graphics Lab, Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) at the University of Southern California (USC) and Dr Sarah Atkinson Senior Lecturer in Digital Cultures, Head of the Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries, King’s College London gave a futuristic IET EngTalks inspired by Sir Edward Appleton.Dr Li spoke of how it is possible to superimpose human movements into a 3D Avatar with AI enhancements. So for example, his beta research technology lets you take a simple photo on your smart device and from that, you can automatically generate a full 3D rendering - all using everyday technology.   • IUOC SITE VISIT TO BUTRA HEIDELBERG CEMENT SDN BHD - 17TH SEPTEMBER 2018

    Monday, 17th September 2018, Muara - A total of 23 participants from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) visited Butra Heidelberg Cement (BHC) Sdn Bhd, Serasa on 17th September 2018.The technical visit was conducted by IET-UTB On Campus (IUOC) with the aim of allowing participants to have a better understanding and to gain in-depth knowledge of the workings of the organization. The visit started off with a safety briefing that offered guidelines for participants in case of an emergency and stressed the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the plant. This was followed by corporate and technical presentations detailing the cement processing steps in the plant. Spam and phishing has increased over the years to the extent that now nearly 90% of email traffic is spam. Internet domain owners (such as Gmail, Yahoo etc.) and the domains sending emails have implemented stricter checks to detect fraudsters and block spam and phishing emails from entering inboxes.     Communities Committee Americas (CCA) is delighted to announce Mohamed Abdelazez as this year’s Americas PATW regional final winner, with Stephanie Bonvicini taking the runner-up prize. Competitors travelled to Ottawa, ON, from across the region for the final which was organised by the IET’s Ottawa Local Network.
