  • OTT Better Than Broadcast

    Back on the 26th February I attended the Streaming Forum Conference that was co-located with BVE at the ExCel in London. I was there not only to attend the conference, but I was also there to present on the experiences of the last 12 months with respect to UHD HDR to the consumer – more on that for another blog post. This conference was focused on the question ‘OTT: better than broadcast’, but the biggest reveal was that the meaning of ‘OTT’ has many different interpretations, so much so that it might even be immaterial to the conversation. When you hear the OTT acronym, you pick up that it is short for ‘Over The Top’ – but what does it mean?   • IET Solent Retired Members Secretary Wins 2018 Volunteer Medal

    Mr John Harvey is the most recent winner of the IET Volunteer Medal.Emerging  top of a competitive shortlist  late last year, this attainment recognises John’s long-standing support, much of which has been at Solent.  For over a decade now John has done a tremendous job as Secretary of our Retired Members section, which lays on technical visits and a series of monthly talks in the Portsmouth area that attract typically in excess of 100 people - such is their popularity and interest. You will find future events listed as part of our programme.  Congratulations again to John. (We don’t mean to brag, but John’s success follows that of two of our other volunteers -  Gordon Dixon and Joe Dunn, in 2015 .)   • The 2019 IET Scholarships And Bursaries Celebration Ceremony

    Apprentices and students from all over the UK gathered at IET London: Savoy Place for a successful Scholarships and Bursaries Celebration, Workshops and Ceremony in February.The 160 individuals who took part have all been awarded either a Diamond Jubilee Scholarship or an Engineering Horizons Bursary to support them through their studies and launch them into a career in engineering. The day started off with a welcome from IET Awards and Prizes Manager, Linda Deleay, who said: "By winning one of these awards, you have shown yourselves to be passionate about engineering and technology and about pursuing this fantastic profession and promoting it to others."   • IET Colloquium On Millimetre-wave And Terahertz Engineering & Technology

    It was another successful event hosted jointly by the RF and Microwave, Electromagnetics and Antennas and Propagation TPN’s   Held in Savoy Place, London, on 15 March, delegates heard from speakers from NPL, University of Birmingham, Imperial College London, University of Strathclyde as well as many other institutions about the  millimetre-wave and terahertz regions of the electromagnetic spectrum There was also an international element to the event with Michael Marcus from Virginia tech, speaking.   • Engineering Extravaganza Event - 18th March 2019 held at the AMRC in Rotherham

    Another successful 'Engineering Extravaganza' Event held at the AMRC yesterday. Five PEI's delivered activities this time ( IET / IMechE / ICE / IOM3 & IChemE) IET SYLN delivered the Faraday activity called 'Motor Madness' Layla Graham and Alan Chater lead the activity with 4 STEM Ambassadors in support. We once again had an enthusiastic set of schoolchildren attending and managed 5 separate deliveries of the activity throughout the day from the 9 participating schools. A questionnaire was issued to the students at the end of the event via EngineeringUK and it will be interesting to see the results and viewpoints from this at our next Joint PEI/STEM Committee meeting next week.

    Friday, 18th January 2019 –A total of 23 students from UTB on Campus visited Labi Coffee Farm, Brunei's only local source for coffee beans. The students were able to tour the 19-hectare farm and demonstrated how the beans are harvested and treated before they are sent to their processing facility. The coffee beans are exported to countries such as Vietnam, China, Japan, and even as far as Canada.   Friday, 25th January 2019 – A total of 14 On Campus students attended a training on how to tackle fear of public speaking (glossophobia) and delivering an effective presentation.   Sunday, 27th January 2019 – YPS Brunei LN organised a social gathering to strengthen bonds between YPS and on campus group.     Sunday, 17th March 2019, Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 8 participants competed in Present Around The World (PATW) 2019 Brunei Local Heat, organized by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Brunei Local Network last Sunday in Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB).IET PATW Brunei Local Heat is an annual competition conducted by IET Brunei Local Network which provide a platform for youths between the age of 18 to 30 years old to present any Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topic.   • Solent Committee Sets Priorities For Fresh Activity

    Rebuilding our support for early career 'young professionals', strengthening our university links, learning from other networks and possibly supporting a future Hack Pompey event.   The local network committee met in February - one of typically around 3 meetings per year. Having reviewed how well we are delivering against our plans, much of the rest of the meeting was devoted to considering priorities for possible additional activity going forward.  Collectively, this was determined to be (in order of priority): Rebuilding a team focused on supporting early career 'young professionals'.     The results of the IET Northumbria 2019 local universities' final year students' projects competitionThe local universities’ final year engineering projects competition took place on the 13th of March in the impressive new Building Sciences block of Newcastle University. The annual event which is sponsored by IET Northumbria drew a wide variety of entries from Northumbria, Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham universities.   • Magnets, Brains And Currents.. Oh My ! (IET Central London Network Event)

    Professor Daniel Bulte Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford spoke at the "Modern Mesmerism: The history and future of medical magnetism in the brain" event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network. He gave a very entertaining talk on how Franz Mesmer was able to use magnetic energies and animal-magnetism to promote wellbeing in the Victorian age. From the talk, it sounded like the approach was genuinely ground breaking, in that, it probably created the first franchise model in the Victorian age where his theories even warranted a Royal commission which created one of the first ever peer review processes for clinical trials.     "The average proton does not know the difference when inside a submarine or human brain" is where his intrigue started explained Professor Daniel Bulte Associate Professor in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford at the "Modern Mesmerism: The history and future of medical magnetism in the brain" event held at the IET Savoy Place organised by the IET Central London Network – March 2019. Professor Bulte gave an engaging and entertaining account of how mesmerism prompted the creation of modern MRI scanners used in hospitals today.   • UKSEDS Space 2019 Lifts Off At Edinburgh!

    I recently attended the UKSEDS Space Conference up in Edinburgh on 2 March 2019.  It’s the first conference I’ve ever been to and I had a great time meeting all the other exhibitors, together with lots of amazing students. There was a lot of interest in the sponsored stand that the IET Satellite Systems & Applications Network organised and I was pleased that some of our wonderful volunteers were able to help out over the two days of the conference. I also managed to spend some time having a go in the simulator docking the Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station.  I was surprised that even with my slightly numb fingers I managed it first time and have the certificate to prove it.  That will be a great memento of an excellent conference.  I was just so disappointed to have to leave…

    The   IET   Cyprus   Network   hosts its annual global   competition   for Young Professionals and Students within engineering to develop and showcase their presentation skills.   All you have to do is give a 10-minute presentation on an engineering or technology related subject, followed by a short question and answer session.   The participants should be between 18 – 30 years of age to enter and is open to both IET members and non-members.   There are prizes for the winners and the runner ups and certificates for all participants.   To enter you will need to write a short abstract (maximum 1 side of A4 page) describing the proposed subject of your paper; your talk can be about anything related to the field of technology or engineering.
