  • Porsche Museum Report

    After a false start in January the Germany IET LN finally managed to visit the acclaimed Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart on Saturday 9th. May. After polling members using Doodle we decided that a weekend visit would be appropriate even it meant missing the chance of a combining the museum visit with a factory tour. This time there was no lack of initial support, especially from members and friends based in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. A group had planned to travel from Munich by train before the train drivers' strike made that virtually impossible. Nevertheless, the hard core car enthusiasts were not to be put off. Some travelled by car whilst others braved the intricacies of the emergency train timetable or used hitherto unknown bus routes through parts of Stuttgart never before…

  • Day Events

    The IET Cambridge network often arranges events and visits to be undertaken during the normal working week. The visits may be to a factory or industrial site or for example to a special event that has an engineering focus. Often, the venues visited do not permit access to the general public. Visits may be arranged at short notice. If you wish to be made aware of these events and visits, please email Dave Horan at iet.rm.cambs@gmail.com who will ensure you are added to an email list for daytime events.

  • NESC interested in IET Accreditation

    (Members of NESC meet with the IET TT LN) On the 2nd July, the National Energy Skills Centre (NESC) met with the IET TT LN to discuss their interest in accrediting their programmes with the IET. The main focus was for their 4 x apprentice programmes to become recognised by the IET and receive the internationally recognised accreditation. This was identified as a key component to their being a technical and vocational institution as wel as a component of their strategy in becoming a Polytechnic Institute. (President of NESC, Kern Dass, with members of the IET TT LN) The members of NESC recognised the value of the IET brand in assisting the institution to raise their profile and become a "career choice" for regional students.   • IET Supporting The APETT Technical Conference

    IET TT LN Chair Anthony Chadee was kind enough to provide the following account of the IET presence at the APETT Technical Conference: (Chair Anthony Chadee and PATW Co-ordinator Ahmad Mohammed) APETT hosted its Annual Technical Conference on June 25 and 26 at the National Energy Skills Centre. The Theme of the Conference was Engineering for Sustainable Development. IET TT LN was invited to the event in which we showcased the IET to many attendees. At this event we were able to attract many potential young engineers. One of the most favourable outcome was an invitation by the NESC President, Mr Kern Dass to discuss membership and accreditation of the NESC.     What is Cyber hygiene? Does it exist now? certification or cyber-Badges are now commonplace for most cyber folk. Some are experts so badges are not so important, others use badges to climb the social ladder. Whilst climbing the rungs has always been colourful through out history, its tone within Cyber hygiene can be a little more sever. An attack needs precautions, internally and historically the power to vito is sufficient enough. The world of commercial badges and its advocates tend to self nurture and often when questioned directly - these badge collectors tend to be miffed to a solution and often delegate down in an 'open door' fashion to avoid embarrassment that their badge can not deliver on and further can be cyber hygiened intentionally into age and tenure in a company.     The latest Eastern region prestige lecture – SKYLON – the future of space transportation – was held on 4 June at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. The event was preceded by exclusive access to the museum’s collection, before meeting up for networking and refreshments. The IET.tv crew were in attendance, interviewing delegates to find out what brought them to the event, and volunteers, to gain an insight into why they volunteer for the IET. Dr Robert Bond gave an interesting presentation to a lecture theatre that was almost standing room only. This was followed by a lengthy Q&A session.   • Raspberry Pi - Scotland North Aberdeen Prestige Event

    The Raspberry Pi is an affordable, credit card sized computer that plugs into a monitor/TV and uses a keyboard and mouse. It allows people to learn how to program, whether that be in languages such as scratch or python. It is possible to create games, browse the internet, play videos and much more. Raspberry Pi started out as a modest collaboration between a team at Cambridge University and Norcott Technologies. The original goal was to provide a response to the decline in students engaging with computer science and related STEM disciplines. A key target was to try to reverse the trend of children becoming pure consumers rather than creators in an increasingly pre-packaged digital world.   • What the ARTS Network got up to at Traffex

    The IET ARTS Network recently went along to the Traffex exhibition at the NEC, where we took the opportunity to host a ‘ Peak Car Usage ’ debate which was well received and generated some good discussion from participants. During the day we also found time to record some excellent demonstrations for our YouTube channel: This is SanPark Multi-Storey Car Parking system in action, a great way of getting more cars into our inner city car parks. It also caters for bicycles too as this video shows. The Future of Electric Vehicle Charging – Siemens were demonstrating their new rapid and easy access chargers, one of which is so lightweight it can be installed on a wall. Brompton Bike Hire Dock – Brompton are expanding this facility and plan to have docks in 10-12 UK locations by the end of this year…

  • Peterborough IET/Joint Panel visit to Morgan Motors and 3-Cs on Friday 5th June 2015

    Six hardy IET/PJP souls met up very early on Friday 5th July at the Rowing Lake in Peterborough and got to know each other on the drive down to Malvern, Worcestershire. We arrived exactly on time to join with an IET/PJP member who had travelled independently. We were met and welcomed by our guide John who talked through a video of the history of the Motor Company, the development of the site from pre WW1 to the present, and ran through the itinerary for the visit. We commenced the tour and were shown around the woodworking sheds (the older types of Morgan contain significant amounts of Lincolnshire Ash), the sheet metal sheds (very noisy), the paint/spray bays, the leather and trim shops, the final assembly shed and the pre-delivery facility.
