  • Rapid Assay Readers and Medical Diagnostics

    Lateral flow tests also known as lateral flow immunochromatographic assays, are simple devices intended to detect the presence (or absence) of a target biochemical marker without the need for specialized and costly equipment. The most common of these devices is the home pregnancy test which tests for hcG in urine. Outside of pregnancy testing, these simple tests can be used with blood, urine or saliva as a quick diagnostic for the presence of drugs, diseases like HIV, Hepatitis C or Malaria as well as more common items like the presence of Vitamin B12. Each test strip is often made from materials that enable capillary action, such as porous paper or polymers, to allow the test fluid to ‘flow’ along the strip.     Following on the successful CHAIN 2016, the IET Manchester along with eight other institutions and societies presented at CHAIN 2017 on the 18th February. We had presenters talking about interesting projects such as CityVerve by Nick Chrissos representing the IET, to the challenges the next generation of engineers will face, and discussion panel to give best advice to future engineers, and many more.   • IET Brunei Network organised technical visit to oil and gas waste treatment plant

    The Institute of Engineering and Technology ( IET) Brunei network organised a technical visit to CIC Environmental Sdn Bhd. A total of 14 IET Members and non members alike ( which include students from UTB, lecturers from Politeknik Brunei, professional engineers and consultants) got the opportunities to get an insight on how waste treatment and recycling of waste materials are carried out in the company. CIC is a leader in Brunei Darussalam in the waste treatment of wastes particularly from the oil and gas industry. IET Brunei network is committed to promote engineering and technical knowledge in Brunei.

    Continuing Professional Development, or CPD, is the maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills relevant to you remaining a competent engineer or technician. As you will know, the Engineering Council has stated that members of the institution should undertake a minimum of 30 hours of CPD a year. These 30 hours can be achieved in a number of different ways, including through training courses.   • National Cyber Security Centre Officially Opening 14th February

    The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) will be opened by the Queen today (14 February), in London. There has been a lot in the news recently about cyber-attacks, not just lower level personal attacks (ie identity fraud, stealing individuals credit card details), but the bigger national and international attacks (ie attacks on local governments and the alleged Russian interference in the US election ). Even more frightening is the revelation that the UK faces dozens of cyber-attacks every month and two thirds of businesses have faced an attack in the last year. The aim of the Centre, which is part of GCHQ, will be to make the UK one of the safest places from these cyber-attacks. They will look into flaws in public sector websites, spoof emails and shut down phishing websites. This response…

Chairman The Retired Professional Engineers' Club, Bristol was established by Michael Clinch some 22 years ago but, over the last few years, has suffered from a failure to gain new members, decreasing attendance at meetings with no-one coming forward to replace retiring Committee members. This is a situation common to many social and charitable organisations, many of which have closed in recent years. The Bristol Association of Engineers closed at the end of 2015 after 120 years of distinguished existence. Failure to replace committee members is no reflection on the membership : many have served previously and are now too old or sick to serve again. Professor Guang-Zhong Yang (FREng, FIEEE, FIET, FAIMBE, FIAMBE, FMICCAI, FCGI) is director and co-founder of the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, and Chairman of the UK-RAS Network.     Advancing into 2017, I can’t believe a month has gone already.  2016 was a good year for the Aerospace Network,  we started the year off  with an  All Electric Aircraft Seminar .  This attracted academics and industrialists working in this emerging hot topic area. Following on from the conference we produced this Technical Insight . For those that don’t know the layout of the Scotland North Committee, the area is split into districts that each have a representative on the Scotland North Committee.  The Committee pulls together the event plans for the year and submits the budget.  The Scotland North Committee organises events in Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth, Thurso, Orkney, Shetland, Stornoway.  These events cover a range of engineering, management and general interest.   • Competition to Uncover Space Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow

    Young people have the chance to win £10,000 in a competition to come up with ideas on how to use satellite data to improve life on Earth. The SatelLife Challenge, run by the UK Space Agency, is looking for inspirational ideas from those aged 11 to 22, linking satellite and space data and its application to everyday life. Examples could include using satellite data to tackle loneliness amongst elderly people, looking at changes to green spaces in your town and identifying exercise routes based on traffic flows.   The competition, which aims to support the development of science, data handling and technological skills, is split into three age groups, offering five prizes of £5,000 for each age category with an overall winner receiving £10,000.
