2013 Hearn Dinner And Lecture

IET Hong Kong YMS Feb-15 Blogging

Run for IET Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2015 The 19th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, Hong Kong's largest participatory annual sporting event, is scheduled on 25 January 2015 (Sunday). Similar to previous years, an IET Hong Kong running team is formed to participate in the “10km” race route. It includes 8 runners and 14 cheering team members from Branch Committee, Management Section, Younger Members Section and Students Sections. On Marathon day, with high spirit, sufficient warm up and support from cheering team, our running team finished the “10km” race successfully in one and a half hour. A while back I researched how m&a’s are used or architected even, to bring success to a partnership or benefit a company through division or expansion and still be able to effect the market place. Using industry examples I was able to review how a few m&a’s were used to support strategy for growth and recovery across many industry sectors. There are many business justifications for mergers and acquisitions. A technology company may want to acquire medium level skilled Engineers so may purchase a generic IT Company or stakeholders may wish to create more wealth based off capital, may be looking for a customer user base to acquire or economic analysis may also show that the market entered by the company is no longer attractive and as such needs to change their growth strategy or contemplate M&A…

Science Festival

The IET's Cambridge Network will be manning a stand in the small hall at the Guildhall on Saturday 14 March. The objective is to communicate engineering and technology to a wide audience. There will be kits for young children to build and take away torches, education packs for teachers and interactive equipment for children and young adults to use. Come and meet the IET Cambridge Network of Engineers - we would be pleased to meet you.

Our Largest PATW Competition!

On Saturday 28th February 2015, the YPS and LN executive hosted the IET 2015 PATW competition at the NESC Drilling Academy to fourteen excited and competent students. The competitors ranged from various institutions as UWI, UTT and the Drilling Academy. (The YPS with the 2015 PATW finalists) The newly formed Young Professional Section was instrumental in producing an effective event that provided a forum for students to demonstrate their presentation styles, their current research in various engineering and technology topics as well as highlight their interests in these fields. Porsche Museum - another try?

We would like to try again to organise a visit to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, probably in early May 2015. We also have the possibility to take a works tour, but not on weekends and not with children under 16 years of age (not allowed by Porsche). Of course, families with children would be welcome to join the museum part. Black Friday: The Avro Arrow tragedy

There's nothing fun about having an exciting and challenging project you've put your heart and soul into cancelled, especially just as it's coming to fruition. But that's exactly what happened to the Avro Canada team on Black Friday, February 20, 1959, as it was ramping production of its stunning new bird, the Arrow. Aviation enthusiasts the world over and many an average Canadian know the sad story of the Avro Arrow project. In the early 1950s, ambitious requirements were put forward by the government for the design of a supersonic defence interceptor, and Avro Canada obtained the contract.

IET Scotland Recognition Event

IET Scotland hosted its annual recognition event for engineers who have recently achieved FIET, CEng, IEng and Eng Tech. Recipients and their guests attended a networking session and were presented with a certificate of achievement. Speakers included IET Vice President, Dr David Evans, IET Scotland Executive Chair David Richie, Senior Vice Chair Derek Little and Knowledge Management Board member Michael Cotterell. Presentations were received on volunteering and the IET in Scotland. Congratulations to those who have achieved FIET, CEng, IEng and Eng Tech and were not able to make it. The evening was enjoyed by all and we hope to see more engineers next year!

IET NI IngeNIous Female Student Award 2015

The IET Northern Ireland Local Network is delighted to announce the launch of the second annual IngeNIous Female Student Award. The competition is to identify and reward Northern Ireland’s most promising female student. Details on eligbility and how to apply can be found on the poster. IET Champions Female-friendly Recruitment And Retention

Welcome to our new campaign to share best practice for organisations making sure recruitment and retention is helping them to attract more women engineers. Only 6% of the engineers in the UK are women, which means that engineering companies are not accessing half of their potential talent pool. Given the impending skills crisis in engineering and technology, this makes poor business sense – and yet 43% of organisation are taking no action to tackle this lack of gender diversity in their workforce. The IET wants to help address this issue by showcasing organisations who are taking action to make their recruitment and retention more female friendly. The Challenges Of Building A Nuclear Plant

Atkins Nuclear Projects Director, David Whitmore, recently gave a talk at EDF Barnwood on the new approaches in the UK nuclear industry that are being driven by international designs.
