    Neil Hatton, the CEO of the UK Screen Alliance, is an experienced and well-known figure in post-production and broadcast in the UK having worked in the sector since 1979. He started with a stint in the BBC VT department in the basement of Television Centre. For more than 20 years, he worked at MD/CEO or owner level within post production houses in Soho like Frontier Post and Azimuth. In 1992, he pioneered non-linear editing and became the first person to cut a long-form documentary on an NLE in the UK. Over the years, he gained many primetime editing credits on all the mainstream channels. Neil has produced conferences and training events around the UK for the BBC Academy; "Sound Matters" about audibility and loudness in TV sound and "File Delivery Made Real" about the introduction of delivery…

    In two weeks we’ll be heading to Glasgow University for the IET Colloquium on Millimetre-wave and Terahertz Engineering & Technology 2017 event. This is a joint event between the Electromagnetics, RF and Microwave and Antennas & Propagation TPN’s.   • Fundamentals of Project Management Lifeskills Workshop

    The Lifeskills Workshop: Fundamentals of Project Management was organised by the Victoria Young Professional Committee on the 21 st of February. This was the first Lifeskills Workshop of the year. The IET offers different workshops every year on various topics related to soft skills engineers need on the workplace and provides the material and the speaker. The material is the same for all IET Communities over the world and as such is designed to be understandable by all kind of engineers with any level of experience.     The Western Australia (WA) Young Professionals is thrilled to announce the launch of Leadership Program (LP) 2017. The program is run every year aimed at engineering students from across four different universities in WA: University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University and Edith Cowan University. Candidates will be interviewed and successful candidates will be given professional development aimed at leadership skills by leading industry people in WA. Each year we have recruited and retained many new members to join the WA Young Professionals committee.   • Young Innovators Day

    The Grammar School in cooperation with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) organised a Young Innovators Day on Saturday 4th March at the Mall of Cyprus. The event was a tremendous success as a great number of visitors had the opportunity to explore the future through 3D technology which included Robotics, Engineering, Electronic Circuits, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, interactive games, 3D printers, 3D Projectors and scanners.

    Host: The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Venue: One Birdcage Walk, London, SW1H 9JJ Enquiries and Registration are given in the event brochure available from the Engineering Your Future (EYF)  web-site . This is a long-running careers event for 6th formers, to help inform them about the variety of engineering careers available.     Focusing on the theme of field based technologies, I took opportunity to attend a comprehensive event hosted by IET London Network where Dr Tasos Dagiuklas a leading researcher as LSBU spoke about how cloud based offerings are today maturing as commercial solutions specifically to support the needs of field based users. In addition, how future cloud offerings would provide commodity services these users. Cloudlets, Fog and Edge – These 3 words sound too abstractive to describe technology , however, when considered with 5G services as the end goal, these 3 cloud offerings discussed by Dr Tasos Dagiuklas make clear on how cloud solutions will help deliver on the phenomenon of 5G services.     It’s that time of year again – EUCAP17!   If you’re not sure what EUCAP is, it stands for the European Conference of Antennas and Propagation. It is the main conference in Europe for antennas and propagation, organised by EurAAP. The first EUCAP took place in 2006 in Nice, France. The conference will be held in beautiful Paris this year.   • A Mind Blowing Technical Site Visit To Seven Network’s Broadcast Centre In Docklands Organised By IET Victoria

    The site visit was hosted by the very welcoming John Albiston, Head of Broadcast Engineering and Development. John has been with the Network’s Operations for 30 years and during this time he has introduced and led all technology developments from project conception through to execution, including the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the Network’s broadcast centre in Docklands, back in 2002. John’s engineering knowledge and passion showed very quickly and got the group engaged right to the last minute of the tour!   This exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tour provided a unique opportunity to the limited group of 15 engineers to see and hear about the new and exciting developments in the broadcasting space that the 7 Network is pioneering.     To mark #InternationalWomensDay our Young Woman Engineer (YWE) of the Year awards are now open for entries!   Applications are now open for the launch of the prestigious IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2017 which look for the best young women engineers in the UK.   There are three prizes avaialable which aim to celebrate success and highlight the accomplishments of young women engineers, working in the UK today.     One of the ARTS TPN volunteers, John Saville, gave an excellent presentation to the Mersey & Western Cheshire Network just recently, which I was lucky enough to hear.  John worked in the F1 industry for several years and, until retiring, was the Chief Information Officer (IT Director) for the Jaguar Racing F1 team. We started the evening with a bit of fun i.e. John asked: Who had been to an F1 Race – a few hands went up Who had watched an F1 Race on TV – lots of hands in the air Who watches regularly e.g. more than 6 races a year – about a 30% drop off on the previous question Who will be getting up to watch the Australian Grand Prix at 6am on 26 March – that will be me and about six other people then!   To set the scene John gave us a bit of background on the development of the Jaguar Racing…

    Hi all, It has been a while since the NorCal committee last posted and while we have been away, we have been planning the next series of events for our Local Network. This weekend, the 11th to be exact, we will be staging our PATW heat to find out who represents us in Boston in the summer. If you would like to join us and see our awesome presenters in action, we will be at: Etcheverry Hall, Univerisity of Berkeley @ 1pm on March 11th.     As I sit in Savoy house enjoying a rather nice breakfast and the view over the Thames prior to attending today's Exec Meeting I muse over the question above.  Over the last couple of months I have been tidying up my professional accreditations with various Institutions and have come to this long awaited rhetorical question.  In the field of Project Management which of the two organisations above should I join.  What are the benefits (and negatives) of joining either body.  Do we as members of IET have a formal stance relative to this?  What is the Recognition of each within (i) The UK, and (ii) International?  How do these bodies align to Cost Engineering Bodies?     The Younger Members Section (YMS) of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Hong Kong is now organising Young Professionals Programme (YPP) as a half-year elite programme for local young engineers. Selected candidates would be meeting each other on one Saturday afternoon per month for seminars and workshops on engineering management. In YPP, we would like to provide a casual environment for candidates to learn about management and offer opportunities to implement through team projects.   • Visit to RAF Valley

    On the 2nd March 2017, a group of members and non members visited RAF Valley on Anglesey. During our eventful afternoon, we saw how parachutes are maintained and deployed, life rafts are deployed along with emergency rations and other survival equipment. We then toured the hanger used to maintain Hawk T2 jet training aircraft and were impressed at the complexity of the aircraft and the skilled staff who maintain them. Many of the staff are now from outside companies who employ and train local staff as far as possible. Next we saw two rescue helicopters and were given an in depth guide to how the helicopter works and a demonstration of the hydraulics operating the rotor blades. Altogether a fascinating afternoon and we would like to thank the staff of RAF Valley who were so kind to take time…
