  • Annual Golf Day 2014

On the 16 th May a number of IET members and their guests once again met at the Beeldes Lake golf centre for the 2014 annual Brush/Erikson IET golf competition. As usual, the weather was pleasant – in fact probably the best day of the year so far and the course was in great condition. The event followed the usual format; meet up for coffee and bacon roles, then 18 holes, full handicap Stableford – with prizes for: nearest the pin (Chris Price [senior member]), longest drive (Craig Rice [Member]), best guest score (Mike Hayward [38]), best Senior Member score (Chris Price [31]) and best Member score (Craig Rice [38]). Additionally this year, Craig Rice kindly donated a lovely sports jacket for the overall winner – which was awarded to Mike Hayward with his score of 38 points. As has been the…

  • Are you engineering in Guadalajara, Mexico?

A veritable “perfect storm” of challenges and opportunities is profoundly changing the fundamentals of urban areas throughout the world. The driving force is the exploding growth of urban populations caused by both global population growth combined with dramatic relocation to urban centers. The United Nations predicts a near doubling of city dwellers by 2050 as the global population increases from 7 billion to 9 billion with the urban population to grow between 2.5 billion and 3 billion people in the next 30 years. This poses daunting challenges for planning, deployment, operations, and management of infrastructure, procurement and utilization of resources and provision of services. Within each urban area, it becomes more difficult to procure and manage the necessities of life and business…

  • IET Calls For More Rigour In Mobile Phone Health Effects Research

The quality of mobile phone health effects research is decreasing, says the IET in its latest position statement. Despite a continuous influx of minor studies finding evidence that mobile phones and other magnetic field inducing devices, including overhead power lines, could possibly cause a wide variety of health conditions, the IET believes there is no reason to worry. In a recently published statement on Biological Effects of Low-Level Electromagnetic Fields, experts from the institution’s Biological Effects Policy Advisory Group (BEPAG), have reviewed about 600 scientific articles and concluded the data doesn’t show a smoking gun. • Intellectual Property In The ICT Sector

On the 29th of April 2014, the IET Barcelona local network, together with Bardehle Pagenberg organised a seminar on the Intellectual property in the ICT sector. Our host and fellow IET member Dario gave us a warm welcome and after presentations we were introduced and given an overview on the field of Intellectual property and patents in the ICT sector. Given the vastness of the topic, we were exposed to the essence of the different types of intellectual property, when each of them should be preferred with respect to the others while also explaining why it is important to protect novel technology endeavours. Being able to testify that a company is the owner of a core technology asset can mean a very effective defence against other competitors trying to use it illicitly and can mean the possibility…

  • How to build a better building

“The built environment industry strives to design, construct and operate buildings to withstand both natural disasters and man-made hazards,” ASHRAE president Bill Bahnfleth says. “We must use the knowledge gleaned from disasters like the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, Superstorm Sandy , last year’s Oklahoma City tornado and others, as well as predictions of the effects of climate change , to our advantage to save lives and infrastructure in the future.” Article in full: http://www.environmentalleader.com/2014/05/14/how-to-build-better-buildings/ Keep an eye out for the IET BE Sector Special Interest Publication (SiP) publishing later this year 'Managing Complexity and Uncertainty in Developing Cities' Find out more: http://www.theiet.org/events/2014/195075.cfm

  • Software Reliability

Software Reliability Software robustness is a hot potato in Software Development (from requirement capture to validation and verification - and yes, I think software robustness has to be considered and systematically built into each phase of the software development using appropriate processes and methodologies). Faulty, unreliable software designs are expensive to redesign, enhance, retest and/or maintain. They are also damaging - business and reputably damaging to the developer(s) and their client(s), with potential loss of end-user customers. The legal and technical wrangling over the Government's "abandoned" NHS IT system is an example of software development complexity, what can go wrong and how it went wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHS_Connecting_for_Health http://www.theguardian…

  • Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance environment competition.

The ICT KTN are announcing a competition... Traditional, well-modelled, structured information sources are supported by a growing amount of unstructured, less well-defined sources. The addition of non-traditional data sources creates various challenges in sensemaking including use of techniques that can cope with large-scale data. Through this themed competition, the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE), are seeking projects to demonstrate solutions as prototype software capable of taking part in a live information processing experiment in September 2015. There is a competition briefing event on May 22nd in London. Full details are available via the SBRI website: https://sbri.innovateuk.org/competition-display-page/-/asset_publisher/E809e7RZ5ZTz/content/information-processing-and-sensemaking…
