  • Successful Tech Talk On The Topic Of Metamaterials And Metasurfaces Hosted By Ottawa LN

    The Ottawa Local Network was pleased to host a Tech Talk by Dr Shulabh Gupta, Associate Professor at Carleton University. Dr Gupta currently focuses his research in high gain antennas, electromagnetic metamaterials and their applied physics applications ranging from mm-wave to optics. Following a welcome by David Mann, Dr Gupta gave an interesting talk explaining the difference between metamaterials and metasurfaces, and talked around their potential applications in network optimization and in-building targeting as well as future potential applications in defence where EM camouflaging is a key research area.  Dr Gupta was able to explain these applications clearly, and there was a lively discussion around potential applications as well as ‘future developments’ where active metasurfaces could…

  • Award Ceremony For IET West Yorkshire Local Network Prizes For Student Excellence 9th December, Wakefield College

    Jeffrey Utley MBE has presented a 2019 IET Local Network Prize for Student Excellence to Charlie Exley who is studying at Wakefield College. Congratualtions to Charlie on this fantastic achievement! Universities or colleges without an accredited programme can nominate a student for the Local Network Prize for having achieved excellence on their course. The prize winner receives £250.

  • PATW Competition Châlons-en-Champagne

    A short report on the IET French Network participation in the PATW competition.On 7th January 2020, four IET French Network volunteers went to the Arts & Métiers in Châlons-en-Champagne to assist the On Campus group with the PATW competition and IET Day. 2 volunteers, Phil Dunbar and Paul Poncelet acted as judges for the PATW competition, along with Eleanor Asprey from ThincLab, a business incubator. There were four entrants, giving presentations on Balancing off-shore wind turbines, Electricity generation for low-tech communities, Artificial heart solutions and Computer vision. The presentations were all made to a high standard, and were very interesting, provoking questions to probe the entrants' knowledge of their chosen subject, which they all handled well.     The IET Cyprus Network hosts its annual global competition for young Professionals and Students within engineering to develop and showcase their presentation skills.All you have to do is give a 10-minute presentation on an engineering or technology related subject, followed by a short question and answer session. The participants should be between 18 – 30 years of age to enter and is open to both IET members and non-members. There are prizes for the winners and the runner ups and certificates for all participants.     Hushed excitement builds..... It gives me great pleasure to announce that our 2019 winner is Michael Hutchinson  Michael received his MEng degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Loughborough University, in  2015, and received his PhD degree in Autonomous Systems and Robotics at the same institution in 2019, under the supervision of Dr Cunjia Liu and Prof Wen-Hua Chen in the Autonomous Systems Laboratory of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering. Michael’s doctoral thesis was focused on Bayesian estimation and informative path planning for inverse problems, with application towards autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle based emergency response to hazardous material (HAZMAT) situations.     The University of Westminster and the IET's Vision and Imaging Technical Network worked to organise this event in its 9th iteration.As well as 3 days of interesting talks and demos, The Vision and Imaging Network gave awards to the best technology demo in the field of Vision and Imaging.   • S.P. Thompson Pamphlets: Electric Clocks

    The Silvanus Phillips Thompson pamphlet collection was collated and arranged by Thompson, the former President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and professor of physics at the City and Guilds Technical College in London. The collection covers a wide range of topics in physics and chemistry including electrical horology. Particularly, a box titled: ‘Electric Clocks and Time-Indication III’ (UK0108 SPT/P/I/065), illuminates Thompson’s interest in electrical synchronised clocks and his involvement in the Synchronome Syndicate Limited. It includes correspondence and pamphlets from the Synchronome Syndicate Limited and the Synchronome Company Limited.   • UWI 12th Public Seminar On “Project Management Practices In The Caribbean” On Saturday 14th December 2019.

    There were over 70 participants including invited guest speakers, Project Management professionals, academics, students, and delegates from industry who are interested in the theme “Project Management from Quality and Industrial Engineering Perspectives” who attended the Seminar. Many participants commented that the presenters were very knowledgeable about their areas of expertise and the presentations were interactive and informative.
