    HTN Community Update - 5 February 2014

Happy New Year to all IET and Healthcare Technology Network members. I hope that many of you received an email newsletter in January which included a summary of my previous network update as well as an events planner for 2014. (If you didn't, go to MyIET and select the Healthcare marketing option so that you can receive future updates.) This newsletter is the latest step in our programme of community engagement and I was delighted that it prompted many long-standing network members to get in touch, both to suggest new ways in which we can support our membership and also to provide feedback our current activities. The mailing has led to a significant increase in membership of the network. The network has begun to consult with some of its younger members to devise events and resources that are…

    LAPC 2013 Review

November 2013 saw the 9 th annual LAPC take place at Burleigh Court conference centre in Loughborough University. With over 150 papers submitted and the majority of those from non-UK authors LAPC remains a truly international forum to discuss the most recent developments in antennas and propagation. Keeping to our tried and tested single track format with the usual relaxed and informal approach, LAPC 2013 was the ideal place to network and exchange ideas with those from academia, industry and government. Each session featured highly respected invited speakers covering topics in Space Antennas, Radio Propagation, Antenna Modelling, Emerging Technologies in Antennas and the Latest Developments in Antenna Measurements and Simulations. Videos of these oral presentations are available on IET.tv…

Nigeria PATW 2013 held for the first time on Campus!

The Nigeria PATW was held at the weekend on Saturday 29 June 2013. The Delta State University played host providing the Institution's Electronic Library as Venue for the event. An excited group of engineering students were in attendance. Unfortunately not one of the 5 entrants from the University to the Competition made presentations as they were all recent graduates and called up to compulsory national service a few days to the event. Undaunted, University Management were ahead to support the event to success. All three presenations were from students of the neighbouring Federal University of Petroleum Resources. The local IET Committee are grateful for the support of Engr. Smith Otuagoma, HOD, Electrical Electronics Engineering who was University appointed fascilitator for the event.

Visit to Control Tower of "El Prat"

On Oct 3rd 2012, the Barcelona local network of the IET paid a visit to the Control tower of the main Barcelona city airport "El Prat". We were received by the tower supervisor, the staff member responsible for the IT system and by the person responsible for the radar system. We began the visit quite literally from the Top as we were led up to the top of the tower were the full extent of the airport can be seen. This includes the long runaway on the north side running east-west where aircraft land, a smaller parallel run away on the south where aircraft take off and a third one that crosses the two south-north mainly used for night operations that avoids excessive neighbourhood noise pollution since the aircraft approach the airport from the sea. As expected, procedures are quite strict and…
