IoT & Breaking The Land Speed Record (IET Hereford and Worcester)

"IoT and breaking the Land Speed record" was presented by Peter Karney, Head of Product Innovation at Digital Catapult, organised jointly with the IET Hereford and Worcester and IMechE network. The 'Bloodhound' is looking to set new land speed records. With 6.4 tons of total weight, the wheels are designed to speed up to 10,200 rpm and are currently being tested to achieve 1000 mph, the current land speed record is 760 mph and was set 20 years ago. For the main propulsion, the bloodhound is using an Eurojet EJ200 jet engine developed for Eurofighter and a bespoke mono propellant rocket to generate 212kN of thrust. It's not only the mechanical engine parts that contribute to the thrust, but also by challenging existing aero dynamical concepts, propulsion efforts are being increased…

Cyber Security Hygiene - Don't Wash Your Hands Of It (Anglian Coastal Local Network).

Paul Maskell, Head of Cyber, Risk and Technology of UK Finance, spoke at the 'Cyber Security Hygiene - Don't wash your Hands of it' webinar organised by the Anglian Coastal Local Network. As a lecturer in Cyber Psychology, he explained people are less motivated by cyber security as we have always been conditioned to give data away. We have be taught there is no value in our data.  However, once we understand the value of our data , we automatically start to become motivated to protect it. For example, we might not value our own data, but hackers do!! Your data has value to someone, somewhere - and that should motivate you to not only value your data, but also know how to protect it. He explained that online data is virtual, therefore our value mechanisms are based of risk assessments. For example…

On the 30th September 2020 I organised an IET SYLN webinar about the work of the 'Sheffield Urban Flows Observatory by Dr Danielle Densley Tingley, who works at the University of Sheffield and is a member of their Energy Institute. The presentation is part of the Sheffield City Regions objective to seriously de-carbonise the city over the next 10 years or sooner if possible. This amounts to the 'de-carbonisaton' of transport alongside legacy industrial, commercial and domestic buildings across the city and promote 'green' options for new builds. The event was all online due to Covid-19 limitations but was attended by 65 delegates on the night Our sincere thanks was expressed to Danielle for a most interesting and informative presentation.
