Why Will The Developing Nations Not Consume Cleaner Renewable Energy At The Stake Of Their Economic Growth?

Shuvechchha Ghimire   shares another interesting article about the roadmap of developing nations towards emission controls and adopting renewable energy. She is a graduate in Electronics and Computer Engineering from the University of Brighton and is also the founder of UNITEC Solutions Ltd which provides customised enterprise automation solutions. In his address to the UN in September 2020, President Xi Jinping made an unconditional commitment that China would reach net zero emissions by 2060. India likewise has ambitious plans to generate 100GW solar power by 2022. These initiatives are widely seen as indications that the developing countries might shift gears to meet the net zero emissions targets. However, the ground enthusiasm towards net zero differs significantly from the policies. To…

  • Energy Efficiency In Particle Accelerators

    Energy Efficiency In Particle Accelerators

Read on for a report on our recent workshop, written by our Chairman, Professor Graeme Burt.Particle accelerators use up huge amounts of electricity, with CERN currently using 10% of the electricity in the Geneva region. The next generation of particle accelerators for high energy physics would require their own power stations if changes are not made soon in the way we approach accelerator design. The next generation of machines need to be more responsible and look to reduce the amount of electricity needed.  The UK is one of the leading nations in improving the efficiency of particle accelerators. Cockcroft recently hosted a workshop on behalf of the Particle Accelerator Engineering Network on energy efficiency of particle accelerators on the 22nd March. In this workshop we will present state…

  • You Can't Be What You Can't See: Importance Of Having Role Models

You Can't Be What You Can't See: Importance Of Having Role Models

One of the key barriers to increasing diversity and inclusion in engineering is the lack of counter-typical role models to influence and inspire young people. Having a role model can influence one’s action and motivate people to strive to uncover their true potentials and overcome weaknesses. We are delighted to have Alexandra Knight from Stemazingltd and Dr Jan Peters MBE to get together and discuss the importance of having a role model and going from “Imposter to Superhero” in STEM. This short talk will highlight the importance of tackling gender stereotypes young and explain what Stemazingltd is doing to ignite inspiration and amplify inclusion in STEM and how you can get involved. "You Can't Be What You Can't See" Date: Thursday 18th March 2021 Time: 2pm (GMT) Location: Online (via Zoom…

  • Welcome To Our New Chairman - Professor Graeme Burt

Welcome To Our New Chairman - Professor Graeme Burt

As particle accelerators have become larger and more complex they require more and more professional engineers to deliver them, whether its intelligent control systems, high power cooling systems, nanometer alignment and stabilisation, ultra-high precision manufacturing or high gradient RF engineers are at the heart of cutting-edge accelerator technology development. The future of accelerators also looks likely to need engineers to move from the laboratory-based novel accelerators into operational facilities, with more skills in lasers, machine-learning, micromachining, FPGA’s, and high-temperature superconducting magnets being required. Engineers can also help accelerators benefit society or reduce their impact, the energy efficiency of accelerators will be a key requirement going forward…

SABRE: A New Class Of Propulsion - IET Central London Network

On Wednesday 10th March 2021, nearly 400 people joined our IET Central London webinar  where Sophie Harker, a Senior Aerospace Engineer at BAE Systems and a recognised young engineer, enlightened us on SABRE: A New Class of Propulsion. Important note: These are the author's personal recollections and interpretations, which are likely to suffer from errors and selectivity. There is no endorsement from the IET or the speaker. For those like me who were new to the subject, it was a great introduction to the 'Synergetic Air Breathing Rocket Engine' from Reaction Engines. We learnt how we currently get to high speeds with conventional gas turbine engines and Ram/Scramjets, and the main drawbacks of those technologies. Sophie clearly took us through the development history of SABRE and the two modes…

Are The UK Skillset And Industries On Right Tracks To Achieving The Ambitious 2050 UK Energy Targets?

Shuvechchha Ghimire   shares an interesting article about energy goals of the UK.  She is a graduate in Electronics and Computer Engineering from the University of Brighton and is also the founder of UNITEC Solutions Ltd which provides customised enterprise automation solutions.   The 2020 Energy Whitepaper pointed out that the current rate of emissions could increase the global temperature to a devastating 3 degrees by 2100. The ten-points plan published by the government to tackle the situation puts Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) and Green Hydrogen technologies at the forefront. Both CCUS and industrial electrolysis are mature technologies in the UK. Owing to their costs of production and logistics of transport, however, they are yet to be adapted in the wider industrial scales…
