    The IET Faraday Challenge Days are cross-curricular activity days covering Science, Design and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). They have been held at schools and colleges around the UK for a number of years and have proved to be enormously popular with teachers and students alike. It is through its charitable arm of the IET that we are able to provide the Faraday Challenge Days at no charge to Hong Kong schools starting in 2014.   • IET Calls For More Rigour In Mobile Phone Health Effects Research

    The quality of mobile phone health effects research is decreasing, says the IET in its latest position statement. Despite a continuous influx of minor studies finding evidence that mobile phones and other magnetic field inducing devices, including overhead power lines, could possibly cause a wide variety of health conditions, the IET believes there is no reason to worry. In a recently published statement on Biological Effects of Low-Level Electromagnetic Fields, experts from the institution’s Biological Effects Policy Advisory Group (BEPAG), have reviewed about 600 scientific articles and concluded the data doesn’t show a smoking gun.     On the 29th of April 2014, the IET Barcelona local network, together with Bardehle Pagenberg organised a seminar on the Intellectual property in the ICT sector. Our host and fellow IET member Dario gave us a warm welcome and after presentations we were introduced and given an overview on the field of Intellectual property and patents in the ICT sector. Given the vastness of the topic, we were exposed to the essence of the different types of intellectual property, when each of them should be preferred with respect to the others while also explaining why it is important to protect novel technology endeavours.     The ICT KTN are announcing a competition... Traditional, well-modelled, structured information sources are supported by a growing amount of unstructured, less well-defined sources. The addition of non-traditional data sources creates various challenges in sensemaking including use of techniques that can cope with large-scale data. Through this themed competition, the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE), are seeking projects to demonstrate solutions as prototype software capable of taking part in a live information processing experiment in September 2015.
