This was originally an article in IET Member News The IET Southern California (SoCal) Local Network (LN) was recently given the opportunity to have a tour of Google Irvine. Since its reformation in early 2012, the SoCal LN has gone from strength to strength. It now averages eight meetings/tours a year and interest continues to grow – so much so that it now often has more guests than IET members in attendance! This may be due in part to the range of special events it offers, as LN volunteer Julian Harvey highlighted: “We’re concentrating on one off, difficult to organise events, which started in January 2014 with a tour of Space X. Later we arranged a meeting on radio astronomy at CalTech, which was another first for us. The Google meeting was the highest attended event since the LN reformed…

IET President-elect Naomi Climer listed as one of the 50 most influential women in UK IT Computer Weekly has revealed the 50 most influential women in UK IT who are making a difference to the digital economy. Among those recognised in its fourth annual listing is our President-elect, Naomi Climer, who joins other female role models from companies such as Microsoft, Shell, Dell, TalkTalk and TechUK. Naomi has had an illustrious career in engineering, having trained as an Engi neer at the BBC before taking on technical roles across the BBC as well as at ITV. Naomi joined Sony Europe in 2002 and ultimately headed Sony Europe's B2B business, leading 700 staff across Europe operating in sectors from Broadcast and Digital Cinema to Security and Healthcare. Historical Photos Circulating Depict Women Medical Pioneers

You may have seen the shot: it’s of a group of medical students and they’re all women. One’s from Japan, one’s from India and the third from Syria. They’re all wearing traditional clothes from their home countries. Nothing too remarkable in that, you might say. Until you see the date. 1885. These women were students at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMCP). The original image resides in the archives of Drexel University which eventually absorbed the successor to the WMCP in 2003. Archivist Matt Herbison was able to dig up much more about the women as well. These women were nothing short of medical pioneers. All three graduated and each of them thus became the first woman from their respective countries to get a degree in western medicine. Read more...

Blizzard Entertainment Tour

Through the perseverence of Russ Burnham, memebers and geuest of the Southern California Local network were treated to an excelelnt tour of Blizzard Entertainment. Having been founded in the early 1990's Blizzard Entertainment is best known for it's fantasy genre of games, with Warcraft: orcs vs Humans becoming it's first breakthorugh hit, followed by the massively multi-player online role-playing game World of Warcraft, currently in its fifth expansion. At the center of their campus they have an Orc Statue surrounded on the eight sides by their eight core values, starting with Gameplay First, and including Play Nice Play Fair and Think Globally. So much has happened since I introduced the winter newsletter that it is difficult to know when to start so I think I will give just a few highlights of the key things. For those who came along to the RNLI talk in Poole in February, I am sure they will agree with me when I say that we were treated to an extremely good talk put on by a very enthusiastic team from the RNLI. Trip to Butra Heidelberg Cement (BHC)

FOURTEEN members of the Institution of Engineering and Technology-Institut Teknologi Brunei (I2SC) visited the Butra HeidelbergCement (BHC) recently. The group, led by Jevons Quaimbao Penaflor, aimed to get a first-hand experience on Brunei’s Cement Production Industry and learn about the processes involved. During the visit, BHC gave a brief presentation on the general processes and the technical aspects involved in cement production.The group were then given a tour around the main production sites such as the quality control lab, control centre, cement finish mill, the silo storage area, packing area and storage areas. Concrete Canoe Wins PATW 2015 24 May 2015

A PERSONNEL from the Ministry of Defence yesterday took home the first prize of the Present Around The World (PATW) 2015 competition for her creative idea on building a concrete canoe. Tieng Chwei Peng’s winning presentation covered intricate explanation about the engineering aspects of building a floating concrete canoe including material research, hull design, structural analysis, engineering construction and project management taking in example from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National concrete canoe competition. Talk highlights health risks of asbestos 28 May 2015

A talk on raising awareness on the dangers of asbestos was held yesterday at the SEAMEO VOCTECH, Gadong. Organised jointly by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Engineer division of the Brunei Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA), the event drew around 70 registered participants comprising personnel from the Public Works Department (JKR), Ministry of Defence (MinDef), Ministry of Development (MoD), consultants and contractors. The talk was divided into two sessions delivered by a British national, who is a United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)- certified trainer with the National Asbestos and Environmental Training Institute (NAETI), USA, Colin Winning. IET-ITB Student Chapter (IISC) Visit To Bukit Panggal Power Station 2 June 2015

ITB students from the IET-ITB Student Chapter (IISC) made a visit to the Bukit Panggal Power Station in the Tutong District to learn about its day-to-day operations and to gain a more in depth understanding of the individual processes involved in generating electricity. The students were welcomed and briefed by Mr Edwin Chong, the superintendent engineer at the power station. The briefing touched on topics such as the system being used to generate electricity, the different types of maintenance involved in a power station, how electricity is transmitted from the power station to their homes and how it is being monitored. Visit to Curtin and Eaton 18 and 19 June 2015

On 18 and 19 June 2015, a delegation from the IET Brunei Network was at Curtin University and Offshore Industries Sdn. Bhd (a partner of Eaton Eletric) in Miri, Sarawak. The head of delegation was the International Professional Registration Advisor (IPRA), Mr Lim Sam Lee. At Curtin University, the IPRA supported by Honorary officers from IET Brunei Network (Captain Farhan and Dr. Siong) gave a talk to 21 lecturers and students from the Faculty of Engineering. Celebrating Our Everyday Champions

The IET is launching a new campaign entitled Everyday Champions, designed to celebrate the amazing work undertaken by its 4,400 volunteers around the world. The IET is inviting its volunteers to take part by sending in short, snappy, fun and creative videos – as individuals or as a group – discussing what they do as a volunteer, why they enjoy doing it, and how the IET’s core values of integrity, excellence and teamwork come through in their volunteering activities. Present Around the World Competition United Kingdom Final took place on the 11th July 2015 in Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel Manchester. The winner and runner up are: Winner: Mark J Richards - "Up, up and away on a budget" Runner up: Emily Kerr - "The Unique Falkirk Wheel" Mark will be presenting for the UK in the Global final, which will take place in November in London.
