  • Role Modelling

    Role Modelling

Anne-Marie Imafidon argues that we need to think differently about role models. She believes we need to stop looking at them as superhuman and instead embrace their mistakes as well as their successes, their personal foibles as well as their strengths. Once we do that, we can understand that everyone has something to contribute, we can all be members of what she calls the 'role model club'. For further informationa and to hear...

  • Funding for emerging imaging technologies

    Funding for emerging imaging technologies

The Technology Strategy Board is investing up to £1.25m in feasibility studies to bring emerging imaging technologies closer to commercial use. This competition will support projects that could enable richer, more wide-ranging information to be gained from imaging, creating new applications and value propositions, with the potential to disrupt existing markets. Projects must be collaborative and business-led, and the competition is open to all UK-based companies and research organisations. The TSB funds feasibility studies in pre-industrial research, in which a business partner will attract up to 65% public funding of their project costs (75% for SMEs). The projects could last up to 12 months, with total costs of up to £150k per project. Key dates: Competition opens : 3 February 2014 Registration…

    BMW i3 Review

Just came across this review on the BMW i3 in Greater Manchester Business News. Pete James, Chairman of the ARTS Network is currently awaiting delivery of his i3 so we hope to have a review and some images from him posted up on the community area. My eye was also attracted to the article below the i3 on the forthcoming sale of a Talbot Lago T26 Cabriolet. Wish I had enough pennies in my piggy bank to bid for that car.

Three teens from the Simon Langton schools in Canterbury have won a trip to the FIRST LEGO League World Festival in the USA, after winning the National Final of the IET’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) UK robotics competition. The competition is one of the IET’s leading initiatives to encourage more young people to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects in order to pursue a career in engineering. Oli English, Emma English and Carlos Purchase-Galarza, who made up the ‘Invicta’ team, beat off competition from 29 other teams at the event at Loughborough University on Saturday, 1 February to be crowned FLL UK Champions. One of the winning team, 14-year-old Carlos, said: “It is going to be an amazing experience meeting teams from all around the world and having fun together in…

The Little Girl from the 1981 LEGO Ad is All Grown Up, and She’s Got Something to Say

**A Women You Should Know Exclusive** By Lori Day – In mid-January, this article on The Huffington Post hit my Facebook newsfeed like a Justin Bieber deportation petition—it was everywhere . In it, HuffPost Family News Editor Jessica Samakow writes: Pay attention, 2014 Mad Men: This little girl is holding a LEGO set. The LEGOs are not pink or “made for girls.” She isn’t even wearing pink. The copy is about “younger children” who “build for fun.” Not just “girls” who build. ALL KIDS. In an age when little girls and boys are treated as though they are two entirely different species by toy marketers, this 1981 ad for LEGO — one of our favorite images ever — issues an important reminder. UK Storms destroy Key railway line

Sad to see the images of the suspended railway line at Dawlish and other parts of the South West route. I travel along that line when I go to visit the Devon & Cornwall Network Committee and its a lovely train journey. Here's hoping that the Network Rail team get the line back on track, although looking at the appalling destruction caused by the weather, its going to be many months of sheer hard work and brilliant engineering to achieve that.
