  • IET Media Expands At IBC 2019

The network formerly called The IET Multimedia Communications Technical Professional Network has now in 2019, renamed itself as the IET Media Technical Network, or IET Media for short. Under the leadership of Ian Nock and David Short, IET Media is also strengthening its Executive Committee. “The rename reflects that we have moved into an era where media in all its forms is business as usual. We plan to focus more on events that promote networking among the community. The IET Media presentations in the Future Trends Theatre at IBC is a big step in changing the visibility of IET members in the industry, said Ian Nock, Executive Chairman, IET Media. “The strengthened Executive will be working on this in the coming two years, creating more events that cover the broad challenges that today's media…

  • Platform Wars - The De-aggregation And Re-aggregation Of Content

We are pleased to announce our panel on “Platform Wars - The De-aggregation and Re-aggregation of content” on Friday 13th September at 16:00 on the IABM stage in the Future Zone (near Hall 8)We will be hearing from - •    Colin Dixon, nScreenMedia •    Brian Paxton, Kingsmead Security •    Colin Phillips, BT TV •    Chris Ambrozic, TiVo •    Moderated by Justin Lebbon. We will hear from the experts on Friday, but in the meantime, here are my thoughts on the subject. In the beginning it was simple. A “TV Channel” was a certain chunk of radio spectrum and terrestrial technology only allowed a handful of “Channels” in each territory. Aggregation was done by the channel schedulers. The idea of TV Channels survived through cable, satellite and digital switch-over. It took a turn for a worse with…

  • IoT In Healthcare - New Event!

The IoT TPN has launched a new event around the Internet of Things in the Healthcare sector! An aging population is a global challenge and the number of chronic diseases is on the rise. While technology such as IoT cannot prevent the population from ageing or eradicate chronic diseases, it can help to mitigate the situation and improve the quality of life. IoT technology allows for real-time monitoring of patients either through implantable or wearable devices. Vital medical information such as heartbeat, glucose level and aspiration can be sent to medical centres for feedback and analysis. This would enable accurate, fast turnaround data-driven insights to fuel better decision making The challenges in doing this, however, are immense. Data security, privacy, accuracy and, integration of different…

  • WannaCry Does Not WannaDie !

WannaCry (the Microsoft Windows system vulnerability) made its debut in 2017, notably effecting major NHS services. It’s now 2019 and these styles of vulnerability remain active (Ransonware). What is the reason? Why are lessons not being learned from main stream industry failures? Are we still not enforcing patch cycles? Using badly coded websites? Blocking the wrong ports? Incorrectly using Indicators of Compromise? … it could be all these reasons. If you are still mystified on how to deal with Ransomware, then a good starting point would be to attend the IET's Central London September 2019 event, where a Use Case on how the WannaCry outbreak was stopped using technology innovation and industry best practices. The volunteers from the IET Aerospace and Satellite Technical Professional Networks were pleased to be invited by the IET Swindon Local Network to join them on their stand once again, which was one of the largest in the Techno Zone this year. The atrocious weather on the Friday, which led to most of the flying programme being cancelled, worked in our favour by generating lots of visitors to the stand.  We were especially delighted to have a surprise visit by Tim Peake, the astronaut.  Whilst on our stand, Tim was kind enough to try some of our activities including the gliding simulator, meet the volunteers and pose for lots of photos.   I thought this year the variety of activities/literature on the stand was excellent and catered for a wide range of visitors at different stages of their careers…
