  • A Sussex Railway Pioneer

    A Sussex Railway Pioneer

During August we had the delight (and exhaustion) of having our Daughter and two Grandchildren from California stay with us for three weeks. During their stay they rode on quite a number of trains, from the South Downs Light Railway to the Eurostar to Rotterdam to visit their cousin. Included in that list was the Volk’s Electric Railway (VER) that runs along Brighton seafront from the Palace Pier to the Marina, a distance of about one and a half kilometres. The Volk’s Electric Railway is claimed to be the oldest electric railway in the world. It is certainly still transporting people (with a high percentage of children) along the seafront, between the promenade and the beach. I did notice that a suitable shingle bank screens the day-trippers on the train from the naturists beach!   Magnus Volk…

  • AWAKE achieves first ever acceleration of electrons in a proton-driven plasma wave

AWAKE achieves first ever acceleration of electrons in a proton-driven plasma wave

Lancaster researchers have contributed to a major break-through at CERN. In a paper published in the journal Nature, the AWAKE collaboration at CERN reports the first ever successful acceleration of electrons using a wave generated by protons zipping through a plasma.  The acceleration obtained over a given distance is already several times higher than that of conventional technologies currently available for particle accelerators.  First proposed in the 1970s, the use of plasma waves, or ‘wakefields’, has the potential to drastically reduce the size of accelerators in the next several decades.  AWAKE, which stands for “Advanced WAKEfield Experiment”, is a proof-of-principle compact accelerator project for accelerating electrons to very high energies over short distances. Accelerating particles…

MotoE Racing And IET ARTS TPN Rocking It At Donington Park

Or should that be rocketing  it?  Certainly seemed that way standing on the pit wall watching the electric bikes in action ten days ago, as the 4th series of MotoE Racing got underway at Donington Park. This is the electric motorcycle racing championship that the ARTS TPN support. Competing over the two days were new teams  Duffy Motorsport   and Electric Superbike Twente We also welcomed University of Nottingham  back after a year’s absence, with a world class electric motorcycle and a new motor.  The Nova team from Delft University  Duffy Motorsport are a small private team and its excellent that they’ve been able to join the series, as Ryan Duffy has had an ambition to set up his own team for a number of years.  The team’s inaugural race was at the TTZero this year, before they joined up…

    STEMxConsulting: An Intro for Beginners

In Week 2 of Semester 2, UWA IET On Campus held its very first event in collaboration with UWA Consulting Society, 180 Degree Consulting WA and Ernst & Young. The event was developed to answer one question: “Have you ever wondered where else a STEM degree can take you?” In Week 2 of Semester 2, UWA IET On Campus held its very first event in collaboration with UWA Consulting Society, 180 Degree Consulting WA and Ernst & Young. The event was developed to answer one question: “Have you ever wondered where else a STEM degree can take you?” Often many STEM students choose a career path that is aligned with their specific degree. As an engineering student myself, I used to think that engineering is the only way to go. However, STEM students tend to disregard the career possibilities in other sectors…

IET Aerospace TPN Reaches For The Sky At The Royal Air Tattoo At RAF Fairford

Back in July, together with some of the Aerospace Technical Professional Network volunteers I helped out on the IET stand at the RAF Tattoo at Fairford.  The stand which is organised by the Swindon Local Network, has evolved over the years from a 3’x3’ space to the point where this year, it was one of the largest in terms of floor space in the Innovation Zone marquee. In addition to the STEM activities that the Swindon LN had provided, which consisted of some excellent quality hands-on activities that they’d acquired for the weekend, there were a number of IET Education 5-19 items such as ‘Build a Torch’ and new for this year ‘Build a Glider’.  The Aerospace TPN volunteers had fun being competitive in seeing whose glider could go the furthest!  Sadly despite being the daughter of a former Aeronautical…

My Smartphone Thinks I Drive To The KFC Restaurant Every Morning, Should I Be Concerned?

There’s no doubt that smartphones have revolutionised the way we work, play, communicate with others etc but sometimes I do wonder if it’s all a bit too much…I have a map app on my phone (nothing new there, so do most smartphone users) and most of the time I find it really useful as it can tell me where I am if I’m a bit lost and, most importantly, where I’ve parked my car!  But sometimes its knowledge of my travel habits concerns me. I recently became aware that my phone also knows quite a lot about me, where I travel to and from, at what time and interestingly on which days. My phone is connected to my car stereo via Bluetooth technology which means I can use the phone completely hands free whilst in the car.  #noexcuses for handling the phone as I can do everything on voice commands “Siri…
