  • The Chartered Engineer Behind Your Grocery Delivery

Sourcing systems and equipment for Ocado’s robot technology is all part of the job for Mike Lee CEng MIET, an Engineering Supply Chain Manager at the online grocery retailer. When Mike applied for the role, Chartered status was not a requirement, but he says having it on his CV underlined his experience and showed he was a serious engineer.   Engineering at Ocado Engineering and robots might not be the first things you associate with the grocery retailer Ocado. But in fact the company operates a fully automated warehouse known as a Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) using their robot technology. 1,000 robots run across two grids, each the size of a football pitch. They identify and retrieve boxes containing specific products, then deliver these to a picker who takes out the required number for…

  • Astronomy: Principles Of Observing (Thursday 22/02/18 @ Cleopatra Hotel)

Astronomy: Principles of Observing Everything we know about the universe is through the observation of waves, visible radiation for the first few tens of thousands of years of our civilization, the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum in the past century or so, and gravitational waves for the past couple of years. This talk will examine the factors in making astronomical observations possible, and their evolution from the time of ancient Greece to the recent detection of gravitational waves. Specifically, we will discuss the collection of waves, their analysis and their detection, including how to optimize each observation to the 'family' of waves it aims to use, the environmental factors affecting these observational ventures and technological factors improving or deteriorating them. We will…

  • IoT - Are You Ready ? (IET London Network).

In line with the theme of field based technologies, I attended the Lunch & Learn at the IET Savoy Place in London last week on 'IOT - Are you Ready ?' presented by Mischa Dohler a full Professor in Wireless Communications at King’s College London. He gave a very dynamic understanding of wireless communications and what variables are currently being taken into account to create IoT devices, including how power, energy, security alongside demand and product-delivery will be the key success factors in delivering an IoT ecosystem correctly. Interestingly, three years ago the concept of 'Subnet of Things' was introduced by Jim Morrish at the 2014 IET Pinkterton Lecture in the heart of India's tech hub - Bangalore - at the GE's John F. Welch Technology Center. As a key take away, he specifically…

  • A Great Tour Of The National Ignition Facility

IET NorCal had a great tour of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) on Friday. About 10 IET members and non-members toured the NIF with our expert guides who covered everything from the precision of the laser to the continuous pour techniques used to make the glass to the high speed X-ray diagnostics that peer in to the heart of the imploding capsule! A big, big thank you to all those at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who made the tour possible. If we can get a photo, we'll post it!

  • WA IET YP Team Bonding And Planning Day 2018

Words by Emmanuel Iloh The Event started with participants meeting near the Cactus on Forrest place from 10:30 AM, this was a great meetup location because the Cactus is iconic and very easy to locate, some sort of sign for identification would have helped for those who are new to the committee and may not have known anyone already there. Due to some participants been a bit late and we ended up starting the event at about 10:15 AM. We were then assigned to 4 teams at random, with executive committee members as the leaders of each group. In our newly formed teams, we were given an hour and a half to complete the puzzles of the scavenger hunt, based at different locations around the city. The puzzles were a great way for us to break the ice between our fellow team members and the commute from…

  • Satellite Swarms & Mega-Constellations For Global Connectivity (IET Beds & Herts Local Network).

In line with the theme of field based technologies I took opportunity to see how satellite developments are expected to meet consumer demands by attending a lecture on Satellite Swarms - The Launch of Satellite Mega-Constellations for Global Connectivity by Jonathan Higgins, Director, BeaconSeek Ltd.   A while back, I researched the QoS mechanisms required to provide Wireless VoIP for residential use over a carrier grade network - at the time modelling payloads using the DECT frequency range. Since then, we have seen carrier grade providers create simpler home based TCP/IP apps that allow you to use their carrier grade services on your phone. This is almost the norm now and has set the expectation for all home utility services to have some form of presence on your smart device. Jonathan discussed…
