  • Community Manager December Message

For my last Community Manager  blog posting of 2016, I thought I would take a look back at some of our achievements during the last year. In September we held a very successful event on Factories of the Future where next?   This event took place at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry and the seminar room was completely full.   Feedback after the event included comments such as: " This was my first IET event and I must say, I am impressed! I enjoyed most of the speakers, the food and the facilities were fantastic and the overall experience was outstanding! Cant wait for the next event Thank you " " The first IET event I have attended, very impressed with the professional organisation, both pre-event and on the day. Thanks " " well-structured event supported by good range of knowledgeable…

  • End Of Year Look Back

As 2016 draws to a close, I wanted to reflect back on the year. The TPN hosted a quite a few successful events including Active and Passive RF Devices Seminar in February and more recently Electromagnetic modelling and simulations for RF and Microwave Applications . For those who attended we hope that you found them interesting and informative and got a lot out of them. For the IET as a whole, Savoy Place completed its first year of use since the refurbishment, culminating in the official opening by HRH The Princess Royal. What were your highlights of 2016, both culturally and in engineering? Was 2016 a golden year in RF and microwaves?   Looking ahead to 2017, which is rapidly approaching, I am really looking to Towards 5G Mobile Technology – Vision to Reality in London in January. The event…

  • The IET says #9PercentIsNotEnough

Over the last couple of months The IET has been leading a campaign on Twitter to draw attention to the fact that only 9% of engineers in the UK are women.  Hundreds of engineers have posted photos with the hashtag 9PercentIsNotEnough aiming to inspire the next generation of female engineers. A handful of the most recent tweets are brought together in this post. In the Women's Network we'd love to hear what you think, in the year after The IET had our first female President, what will it take to get more women into engineering?  And what will the engineering industry have to do to keep them?   [ View the story "#9percentisnotenough" on Storify ]

  • Community Manager Update - November 2016

As we settle in to the 2016/17 session I felt it would be good opportunity for me to introduce myself. We have recently had a bit of a portfolio shuffle here at our Stevenage office and I am now the Community Manager for the Robotics and Mechatronics TPN.   To get to know the Robotics network I recently joined their November committee meeting and was very excited by some of the upcoming activities the network has planned. Firstly in February we will be holding an evening lecture on the topic of  Robot Ethics: Advances and Challenges in Medical Robotics .  Professor Guang-Zhong Yang from Imperial College and Dr Catherine Easton from Lancaster University will discuss aspects of state of the art and future research directions in medical robotics as well as the ethical concerns involved when cognitively…

  • IET 6th Hybrid And Electric Vehicles Conference Blog

The IET 6th Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Conference, HEVC 2016, was held on 2 – 3 November 2016, at the recently refurbished Savoy Place in London – an excellent venue for a Conference. As a newcomer to the field of HEVC – my objectives being to learn about hybrid and electric vehicles and also, in my capacity as Editor-in-Chief of the IET series of books on Transportation, to identify and sign up potential authors - I was very impressed.   Adrian Vinsome, Head of Energy Research, Cenex, opened the conference, followed by the first Keynote presentation, “HEV – Advanced technology for real world users”, by Andy Eastlake, Managing Director of the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, “ a unique public-private membership organisation building evidence and creating robust policies and innovation support…

  • Cyber Response Triage Process

Its Christmas time. The Elves want to process your gift list for Santa to deliver. They are almost prepared and ready to deliver. Similarly, you’ve already signed off for the holiday season or just about finishing getting projects and activities in order.  Your organisation is likely staggering change activities over the festive season so you actually feel content that all is in order; including the out of hours response framework. Elves are pretty good over the eons to select a repsonse model that ensures Santa has no down time in delivering presents. Selecting the right framework for your business is crucial. It needs to address your forensic needs, legal response requirements, and more importantly, an approach on how the cyber incident will be triaged. Commonly, a security incident follows…

  • Radio TechCon 2016

Radio... What images does that word conjure up in your mind?  For me it’s Robert’s Radios, BB4, local adverts and jingles.  It’s not a technology I find myself talking about and it’s certainly not headline news; that’s reserved for 4K TVs and VR headsets. The future’s visual, immersive.  We all know video killed the radio star thirty years ago.   But did it? Certainly not for those who attended the Conference, better known as Radio TechCon.   Radio technology is as important now as it ever was, and is an exciting engineering industry with world wide appeal and growth. This year, the IET’s Multimedia Communications Network jumped at the opportunity to be one of the conference sponsors and so that’s where myself and fellow Network Executive member Tilly Casson found ourselves being warmly welcomed…

  • Christmas lecture cancellation

Unfortunately the Christmas lecture that we had pencilled in on our calendar of events has had to be postponed.  Not to worry though, as we have a jam-packed calendar of other interesting and entertaining events continuing throughout next year!  Including a few spaces left for our tour of SERC's The Space next Tuesday evening in Bangor:  goo.gl/HoQWOq  (It's a big hi-tech sound engineering facility- register quick, demand is high!!) and also some fantastic events in the North West!

  • Community Manager Update

With the start of our 2016/17 session now underway, I’d like to take a moment to welcome our new Chair, Dr Daniel Abasolo. Daniel has been volunteering with the Healthcare Technologies Network (HTN) for a few years now and, having been Vice Chair for the past 3 years is now taking on the Chair position from Dr Peter Bannister. I’m sure you will all join me in thanking Peter for all his fantastic work as Chair over the past three years and also in giving Daniel a warm welcome to the role! So, what else have I been up to over the past few weeks? Well, I attended the second day of 2nd IET Conference on Technologies for Active and Assitive Living  on 25 October. This two day conference was held by the Vision and Imaging (V&I) Network but had a strong healthcare overlap with the subject matter being…

  • IET Singapore Network 40th Anniversary Celebrations

It's 1.23am in Singapore as i'm typing this but with the adrenaline rush still kicking in, I can say I'm all wide awake and excited to get this blog out as soon as possible. It's amazing how IET Singapore managed to be where it is today. Although I have only contributed 2 out of the 40 years of history, the giants who's shoulder i'm stepping on today have help me achieved more than I ever can. As i reflect upon the many events, visits, policies, and legacy left behind by our pioneers, i feel that i need to contribute even more in order to make the dreams that were laid by them become a reality. The pioneers have put in their heart and soul into the IET to make the world a better place through engineering and we as the current batch of volunteers should now dream greater dreams having full faith…

  • International Cross-Industry Safety Conference

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to attend the International Cross-Industry Safety Conference at the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam. An engaging couple of days with speakers and guests from around the world. There was a range of particularly diverse topics covering safety process analytics, quantification and measurement of safety through to alternative approaches and attitudes to safety across different industries. Below are some of the key discussion points arising from the conference that got me thinking. Have a read and be sure to check out the three podcasts  from Simon Whiteley on the STAMP method and approach to safety.   So safe it actually becomes dangerous?   A question that really stood out to me. This was stated by speaker Ray Master in reference to an incident…

  • Are you CPD ready for 2017?

Many of us complete CPD without even realising we are doing so. The new piece of software you used, the seminar you attended or the article you read are all forms of CPD when relevant to your career. With this is mind completing the required annual amount of 30 hours is easily attainable.  What is changing and why? The IET has chosen to adhere to The Engineering Council’s aspiration that by January 2017 all Professional Engineering Institutions will have introduced a policy of random reviewing of Professionally Active Registrants’ CPD returns.  The IET’s Board of Trustees extended this as a benefit to all IET Members. As an IET member you have already committed to keeping your knowledge up-to-date through Professional Development as part of the rules of conduct. Therefore the only change is…
