  • Our Largest PATW Competition!

    On Saturday 28th February 2015, the YPS and LN executive hosted the IET 2015 PATW competition at the NESC Drilling Academy to fourteen excited and competent students. The competitors ranged from various institutions as UWI, UTT and the Drilling Academy. (The YPS with the 2015 PATW finalists) The newly formed Young Professional Section was instrumental in producing an effective event that provided a forum for students to demonstrate their presentation styles, their current research in various engineering and technology topics as well as highlight their interests in these fields.   • Porsche Museum - another try?

    We would like to try again to organise a visit to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, probably in early May 2015. We also have the possibility to take a works tour, but not on weekends and not with children under 16 years of age (not allowed by Porsche). Of course, families with children would be welcome to join the museum part. We would like to know if you are likely to attend and whether you would prefer: (A) works tour museum tour (Friday) or (B) just museum tour (Saturday).   • Black Friday: The Avro Arrow tragedy

    There's nothing fun about having an exciting and challenging project you've put your heart and soul into cancelled, especially just as it's coming to fruition. But that's exactly what happened to the Avro Canada team on Black Friday, February 20, 1959, as it was ramping production of its stunning new bird, the Arrow. Aviation enthusiasts the world over and many an average Canadian know the sad story of the Avro Arrow project. In the early 1950s, ambitious requirements were put forward by the government for the design of a supersonic defence interceptor, and Avro Canada obtained the contract.

  • IET Scotland Recognition Event

    IET Scotland hosted its annual recognition event for engineers who have recently achieved FIET, CEng, IEng and Eng Tech. Recipients and their guests attended a networking session and were presented with a certificate of achievement. Speakers included IET Vice President, Dr David Evans, IET Scotland Executive Chair David Richie, Senior Vice Chair Derek Little and Knowledge Management Board member Michael Cotterell. Presentations were received on volunteering and the IET in Scotland. Congratulations to those who have achieved FIET, CEng, IEng and Eng Tech and were not able to make it. The evening was enjoyed by all and we hope to see more engineers next year!

  • IET NI IngeNIous Female Student Award 2015

    The IET Northern Ireland Local Network is delighted to announce the launch of the second annual IngeNIous Female Student Award. The competition is to identify and reward Northern Ireland’s most promising female student. Details on eligbility and how to apply can be found on the poster.   • IET Champions Female-friendly Recruitment And Retention

    Welcome to our new campaign to share best practice for organisations making sure recruitment and retention is helping them to attract more women engineers. Only 6% of the engineers in the UK are women, which means that engineering companies are not accessing half of their potential talent pool. Given the impending skills crisis in engineering and technology, this makes poor business sense – and yet 43% of organisation are taking no action to tackle this lack of gender diversity in their workforce. The IET wants to help address this issue by showcasing organisations who are taking action to make their recruitment and retention more female friendly.     Engineering and Technology involves the acquisiton of information to become useful knowledge and the ability to communicate that to someone who will benefit or add value to the systems. This is where the IET PATW provides value to young professionals and the IET TT LN recognises that people are not born with that ability to present information in a manner that will resonate with an audience to achieve the desired outcome. We thank Andrew Charnley for volunteering his expertise and experience in the area of communications and providing a seminar to identify presentations styles and techniques to the participants.   • Visit to Baldock radio station

    Living just a few miles away and regularly driving past, I have often wondered what went on inside the Baldock Radio Station, so when the IET MMC group were invited to visit the station I was delighted at the chance of satisfying my curiosity. Following welcoming refreshments the visit started with short presentations of some of the work undertaken by members of the Station team. It was explained that on receiving complaints of interference, the station can deploy remote monitoring systems placed around the UK together with measuring vehicles if necessary, to track the interference source. Several techniques are used to indentify the interference location, Time Delay of Arrival (TDOA) and Angle of Arrival (AOA) Remote monitoring capabilities can also be utilised to check frequency occupancy…

  • Telescopic lens for superhero sight to help vision loss sufferers

    A telescopic contact lens capable of magnifying the image of the surrounding world could give sight back to those affected by age-related vision degeneration. Developed as part of a project funded by the US defence agency Darpa, the telescopic contact lens consists of two separate layers – one for seeing the world as it is, the other allowing the wearer to zoom in up to three times. To switch between the two vision modes is simple – just blinking with one eye while wearing special glasses. "We think these lenses hold a lot of promise for low vision and age-related macular degeneration (AMD),” said Eric Tremblay, from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne in Switzerland, who led the Darpa-funded research.
