  • Christmas lecture cancellation

Unfortunately the Christmas lecture that we had pencilled in on our calendar of events has had to be postponed.  Not to worry though, as we have a jam-packed calendar of other interesting and entertaining events continuing throughout next year!  Including a few spaces left for our tour of SERC's The Space next Tuesday evening in Bangor:  goo.gl/HoQWOq  (It's a big hi-tech sound engineering facility- register quick, demand is high!!) and also some fantastic events in the North West!

  • Community Manager Update

With the start of our 2016/17 session now underway, I’d like to take a moment to welcome our new Chair, Dr Daniel Abasolo. Daniel has been volunteering with the Healthcare Technologies Network (HTN) for a few years now and, having been Vice Chair for the past 3 years is now taking on the Chair position from Dr Peter Bannister. I’m sure you will all join me in thanking Peter for all his fantastic work as Chair over the past three years and also in giving Daniel a warm welcome to the role! So, what else have I been up to over the past few weeks? Well, I attended the second day of 2nd IET Conference on Technologies for Active and Assitive Living  on 25 October. This two day conference was held by the Vision and Imaging (V&I) Network but had a strong healthcare overlap with the subject matter being…

  • IET Singapore Network 40th Anniversary Celebrations

It's 1.23am in Singapore as i'm typing this but with the adrenaline rush still kicking in, I can say I'm all wide awake and excited to get this blog out as soon as possible. It's amazing how IET Singapore managed to be where it is today. Although I have only contributed 2 out of the 40 years of history, the giants who's shoulder i'm stepping on today have help me achieved more than I ever can. As i reflect upon the many events, visits, policies, and legacy left behind by our pioneers, i feel that i need to contribute even more in order to make the dreams that were laid by them become a reality. The pioneers have put in their heart and soul into the IET to make the world a better place through engineering and we as the current batch of volunteers should now dream greater dreams having full faith…

  • International Cross-Industry Safety Conference

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to attend the International Cross-Industry Safety Conference at the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam. An engaging couple of days with speakers and guests from around the world. There was a range of particularly diverse topics covering safety process analytics, quantification and measurement of safety through to alternative approaches and attitudes to safety across different industries. Below are some of the key discussion points arising from the conference that got me thinking. Have a read and be sure to check out the three podcasts  from Simon Whiteley on the STAMP method and approach to safety.   So safe it actually becomes dangerous?   A question that really stood out to me. This was stated by speaker Ray Master in reference to an incident…

  • Are you CPD ready for 2017?

Many of us complete CPD without even realising we are doing so. The new piece of software you used, the seminar you attended or the article you read are all forms of CPD when relevant to your career. With this is mind completing the required annual amount of 30 hours is easily attainable.  What is changing and why? The IET has chosen to adhere to The Engineering Council’s aspiration that by January 2017 all Professional Engineering Institutions will have introduced a policy of random reviewing of Professionally Active Registrants’ CPD returns.  The IET’s Board of Trustees extended this as a benefit to all IET Members. As an IET member you have already committed to keeping your knowledge up-to-date through Professional Development as part of the rules of conduct. Therefore the only change is…

  • Thank You To All That Attended The Inaugural Chairman's Reception On Thursday, 1 December 2016

I would like to thank everyone who attended the Inaugural Chairman's Reception last Thursday, 1 December 2016 at The Metropolitan Hotel on William Street in the Melbourne CBD. I was very pleased to see that we had a good attendance on the evening. There was  representation from across industry, academia, other kindred professional organisations, recent presenters and workshop presenters, students and of course our committee members including the YPS. I was also very pleased to see that everyone took the opportunity to network with the guests that included students, young engineers as well as seasoned and retired engineers. A great deal of knowledge and experience was happily exchanged around the room! Judging from the excitement and satisfaction that everyone's expectations were met gives the…

  • Visit To University Of California San Diego – Triton Racing Team

The Southern Californian Local Network (SoCal LN) is always looking for new and different ways to reach out to Young Professionals and other than the PATW competition there has been limited success in recruiting YPs in an environment where there is a misperception that membership of the IET is of limited benefit to those living in the US.  In an effort to change this and with having an economically “conservative” year when compared with recent years we decided to make a donation to the UCSD Triton Racing Team, who compete in the Formula SAE student racing series.  This is engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate students organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International, also known as Formula Student in the UK, Austria and Germany.   A recent YP recruit…

  • IET Innovation Awards - Cyber Security Award Winner 2016

Well done to Glasswall Solutions, the winners of the 2016 IET Innovation Cyber Security Award!  The judging panel had this to say about them: “Glasswall has developed an innovative technology that provides protection against inbound cyber threats. While the general concept of whitelisting is not new, Glasswall’s novel application of it should prove to be a beneficial step forward in protecting systems from attack by previously unseen malware. It is potentially a very valuable weapon against document-based zero day attacks.”   To read more about Glasswall Solutions and the other nominnees, please visit the Innovation Awards website
