December on EngX had that familiar end‑of‑year feeling, a blend of celebration, reflection, and excitement for what’s ahead. It was a month filled with stories of global impact, technical achievement, and inspiring people across our engineering community.

Celebrating Global Communities and a year of impact

One of the most uplifting posts this month came from Mariana Vazquez in Celebrating Our Global Communities: A Year of Impact and Innovation. It offered a wonderful look at just how far the IET’s volunteer‑driven activities reached in 2025.

She shared that the IET’s Local and Technical Networks delivered over 900 events globally, welcoming more than 51,000 participants, with activity across 25+ countries. Technical Networks also expanded their reach, with webinars accessed in 101 countries, and South Asia alone delivering more than 165 events — an impressive achievement by any measure.

The post also highlighted standout flagship moments such as APSCOM in Hong Kong and PLAD2025 in Malaysia, the launch of new OnCampus chapters, and the growing AI podcast series. Above everything, it was a heartfelt celebration of the volunteers whose energy, time, and expertise keep the entire community thriving.

Robotics & Mechatronics: A big year wrapped up

Robotics had a strong finish to 2025, thanks to the Robotics & Mechatronics Technical Network’s reflective 2025 Year in Review.

This look‑back walked through a year filled with engaging webinars, covering everything from GANs in robotics to opportunities for growth across the UK robotics sector, and predictions for the future. The network also shared insights from major conferences such as ICRA 2025 and the UK Robot Manipulation Workshop, as well as thought‑provoking blogs on in‑orbit servicing and the rise of task‑specific robots.

With much of the content available on demand for CPD, December gave many in the EngX community the perfect moment to catch up.

Spotlight on Women in Engineering: YWE Awards Ceremony

December also brought with it the final build‑up to one of the IET’s most inspirational annual events, the Young Woman Engineer of the Year (YWE) Awards.

The post Attend our 2025 Young Woman Engineer of the Year ceremony invited community members to gather at IET London: Savoy Place for an evening celebrating exceptional talent in engineering. It painted a lovely picture of the experience,  from networking in the Riverside Room overlooking the Thames to hearing from finalists across multiple award categories.

The long history of the YWE award, dating back to 1978, adds a sense of legacy and progress. It remains one of the most powerful reminders of the talent, creativity and leadership women bring to engineering.

Forum Buzz: Engineers helping engineers

Even in the run‑up to the holidays, the discussion forums were as lively as ever. Topics ranged widely — from Power over Fibre (PoF) technology to electromagnetic radiation behaviour and transformer REF protection challenges.

As always, what stood out wasn’t just the technical depth, but the collaborative spirit: engineers sharing hands‑on experience, unpicking tricky questions, and offering practical solutions in real time. It’s peer‑to‑peer problem‑solving at its best.
