Why is my electric meter off?

Only my meter is off; totally blank Confused

All other neighbour meters are on. Meter is located outside of the flat. I turned off today while I was at work. It was working fine in the morning, i.e. I had electricity.

Online I get only suggestions to top up, but I do not use top up, smart meter or pay as you go options. I get my bill every 2, 3 months and pay regularly.

P.S. I did report issue to utility provider.

  • It's a tidy looking installation. It is not a smart meter and the dummy fuse in the service head is present and sealed so the leccy is not getting there. Have you contacted the landlord?

  • More details needed.

Do you mean that the digital display on the meter is blank, or do you mean that you have no electricity supply ?

What EXACTLY did you turn off and why. Are you certain that what whatever that you turned off has been FULLY and correctly turned back on, and not for example left in a halfway position.

Within you flat there is probably an RCD, this may need resetting after any interruption to the supply, including the turning off to which you refer.

Another but fairly remote possibility is that the supply has been cut off for non payment, with multiple meters as illustrated, it is not unknown for the wrong one to be cut off.

  • Yes. Both property renting and utility company have been informed.

Now waiting for a call back and just curious why just only one meter is not working

  • All RCDs and MCBs are in on position.

Meter is not showing any value and there is no electricity in flat.

I have not touched any equipment outside my flat.

  • The suppliers fuse is actually somewhere else, possibly in a sealed cabinet, so I would wave a non-contact voltage sensor at the tails to see if they are live.

  • OK the meter display is off, because  your power that supplies it is also off. Somewhere before that red link is a real fuse there should be one per flat in a lockable cabinet. I suggest your one has probably blown from age or overload, or worse there may be damage to the cabling that supplies it.Did you have a lot of load on, or has the supply been a bit 'flickery' in recent days? No builders digging up the basement ?

    Mike,

  • Okay. There is a crackling sound when you push an orange cable going into my meter.

Now the meter is working (display is on) ... but still waiting for a utility engineer to check instalations

  • right. That is the sound of an arc (electric flame) at a loose connection in either the box or the redlink ,and your fuse will be in that box.

I suggest you escalate that from

'I have a power cut' and they will come tomorrow,  to

'I have an arcing sizzling fire hazard and I demand you act immediately'

In mainland UK expect someone there in an hour or two. Left to sizzle for itself this could easily set fire to the board.

The box of fuses is not the property of your metering company, but either of the local DNO or of a building network operator.

    Mike.

  • If anybody else with a similar problem reads this, please don't pull on the cable. What if it had come right out?!!!

Hopefully, it will have been sorted by now.

  • At least it should stop fizzling if you pull the cable out.
