    The  The 6th Colloquium on Antennas, Wireless and Electromagnetics - CAWE   event is just a couple of weeks away! This event will provide a look at some early stage research on antennas and propagation, 5G, IoT and related topics.  We have an exciting line up of speakers for the event including: Richard Rudd Richard Rudd is a Director at Plum with a particular interest in the modelling, measurement and underlying physics of radiowave propagation. Richard has managed many studies that have led to the development of new propagation models, generally based on measurements made in-house. He has developed a range of experimental equipment ranging from wideband channel sounders and bi-static radar systems to long-term data loggers and software defined radio systems.   • TV Connect is now in full swing!

    On Tuesday the MMC ran two workshops at Savoy Place for TV Connect delegates and today, the first of the two exhibition and conference days, we have been raising the IET and MMC profile at TV Connect.  We have a stand - B52, very easy to remember - so do please come and see us if you are at TV Connect.  Today Ian Nock, who ran one of the workshops, was a panel member during a 'Codec Wars' discussion session, and at lunchtime Ian, Bob Gentry and I set up a around table discussion, which for logistical reasons as much as anything was rather poorly attended.  However Rikki who has been running our stand has found there is a good degree of interest in the IET in general and the MMC in particular, so it will be interesting to see how much post show follow up we get.

  • Active And Passive 2018

    The Active and Passive RF Devices Seminar was held this year on 30th April 2018 in Savoy Place, London The delegates were treated to a full day of speakers discussing a wide variety of topics – if you were there, tell us what was the most interesting thing you learnt during the day! During the breaks we had a poster session and networking – it was great to see so many people discussing the posters with the presenters! The day ended on a high with presentation to Wenzhang Zhang for Best Student Paper! The prize was a laptop, kindly donated by Toshiba UK – well done Wenzhang!     Following on from our second seminar on ‘Sustaining Airworthiness in Ageing Aircraft’ which was joint with MOD Abbeywood in Bristol, the Aerospace Network have now produced this  tech bite on the subject.   • Cars, Cars And More Cars – Haven’t I Been Here Before?

    A few weeks ago, I experienced a case of deja vu at the Coventry Museum of Transport when I came across their pre-war collection of cars.  Preferring vintage cars (a Bugatti T35 over a Veyron any day for me!) I always seem to gravitate as if on remote control to these vehicles.  I realised of course that I’d been there the previous year when the ARTS TPN held their first ever seminar on ‘Electrification in Motorsports’.   • National Aerospace Library Book Sale 24 May 2018

    An  Aviation Book Sale is to be held at the National Aerospace Library  at Farnborough  on Thursday May 24  2018, 10:30 – 4:30pm. Entry is free and a vailable for purchase on the day will be many  100s  of new / second-hand donated books  and  heaps  of aviation magazines - a  wide range of  aviation history books, autobiographies, biographies, histories of  individual  aircraft  types  /  aircraft companies,  old  journals,  books on the  history of  RAF, technical textbooks etc. - a sheer abundance of aviation titles.    Most of the books will be sold between £1.00 and  £5.00  and the magazines will be 25p each or 5 for a £1.00;  the  money raised from the sale of these  donated  books will be used towards the conservation of historic aviation material in the Library’s archives.  This year…

  • PhD Award 2018 - Seeking nominations

    So, it's that time of year again when we start to look for nominations for our Doctoral Dissertation Prize. The Prize recognises a student for their research excellence in the field of Control & Automation.  Do you know a student who deserves to win this year - the prize money on offer is £500 ! The award is open to all relevant students who were awarded their PhD in the general area of Control and Automation, at a UK university, between 1st October 2016 up to 30 September 2018 and nominations are now open.   Nominations must be made via the nomination form which is available for download in our files section and returned by 1st October 2018.     I'm always fascintated to hear about our wonderful and diverse community members and how they came to be doing the job they do today, so, I thought I'd hand over this blog to David Leng .   David joined the platform in April 2016 and below he tells us more about himself. Looking back on my working life two things strike me: I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have always managed to get paid to do things that I would actually spend my own time doing; and secondly that being in the IET gives me a genuine sense of pride. Not in a big headed, “I’m the great I am” way, but as a quiet achievement after putting in a lot of spade work.     In Out In Out ...Opt it all about!. Attending the Predictably Irrational, The Impact Of Relativity event organised by Harrow IET, David Chong from GSMA discussed the different ways of 'opting in and opting out' in numerous consent based scenarios. An interesting stat presented showed that more countries within the EU had a larger number of health donors than for example in the UK - the main difference? Persons are under the Opt Out framework. The session covered that human behaviours can be predicted to choose relative outcomes based off presented data - including how the decision making process can be tailored to a give a focused outcome. Whilst this is typically seen in UX Design efforts, the broader digital world is also going through an Opt In/Opt Out overhaul - namely, GDPR.   • A Is For Academic Study – Support From The IET (TWAVES)

    Although many people complete their studies first (whether it is a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree etc.) and then look for work experience opportunities or employment, some others do two things at the same time and go for extramural studies (or online learning) and work (sometimes even full time!) as well, with others completing sandwich programmes which offer industrial placements as part of the qualification, or even work based learning qualifications. Some people would even consider working and doing a PhD at the same time or they would simply focus on their doctoral research - on condition that they can afford it or get enough funding.     Do you know that IET WA historical links (previously known as STEE) can be dated back to 1886?     The Bowling Tournament is organized to create a platform of social event for the IET members and non-IET members. This is also created to make a networking session between IET and other engineering institutions, also to spread the awareness of Institution of Engineering and Technology to the public through the Facebook Promotion.   • Cyprus Local Network Supports F1 Education Initiative

    Are you keen to get involved in a project that gives young people ‘hands-on experience’ of engineering?  The Cyprus Local Network did just this when they recently supported the F1 in Schools Cyprus National Final.   F1 in Schools, an Education Partner of the IET, runs a challenge which requires teams of schoolchildren to design, manufacture and race their own model F1 car.  Competitors follow processes used by real Formula One teams, including Computer Aided Design (CAD), and wind and smoke tunnel testing.     The Annual regional IMechE dinner was once again held at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield on the 20th April 2018. Based on the close collaboration between the local IET & IMechE, John Lawrence and I from the IET SYLN were once again invited as their guests for the evening. Since its inception, the dinner has been a huge success with around 200 guests attending through either regional Businesses or Academia sponsored tables. Keynote speakers at the dinner this year were the current IMechE president Carolyn Griffiths, the Master Cutler Kenneth Cooke and their present Regional chairman Alan Bratton. As a graduate, I wondered if I would even be able to enter the pavilion on my own seeing as most university buildings require swiping a student card to enter.
