    Overview France has decided to stop treating “digital sovereignty” like a slogan and start treating it like a risk register. At the first Rencontres de la souveraineté numérique on 26 January 2026, Minister for Digital and AI Anne Le Hénanff launched two practical instruments: the Observatoire de la souveraineté numérique (entrusted to the Haut-commissariat à la Stratégie et au Plan) and the Indice de résilience numérique (IRN) , a private-sector initiative chaired by Olivier Sichel of the Caisse des Dépôts.   • The Rise of Hybrid AI in Engineering

    Across engineering sectors, conversations about AI are shifting. Instead of debating whether AI is being over‑sold or under‑used, the discussion in engineering circles has moved toward something more concrete: how AI can be integrated into existing technical workflows in a way that aligns with engineering rigour, safety standards and domain knowledge. This shift has brought increasing attention to what many research groups, engineering bodies and industry case studies refer to as Hybrid AI.     The first part of 2026 is already shaping up to be an active period for the IET Technical Networks. After a strong 2025, the activity planned for the coming months continues to support members with opportunities for learning, development and connection. 2025 overview Looking back, the Technical Networks achieved significant reach throughout 2025. Webinars drew audiences from over 100 countries and volunteers created over 60 blogs via EngX. Seventy‑four online activities were delivered, generating more than seventeen thousand registrations and nearly nine thousand live views. We re-instated QR codes for members a simple way to link directly to Career Manager, helping to streamline recording of CPD.     Tuesday 26th January 1926, 22 Frith Street - 100 Years since the first public demonstration of a fully working Television system. That dateline was in the mind of the great and the good of the Royal Institution, who were invited to attend the first public demonstration of a working television system. Over 40 members turned up to see what many believed was not possible - literally the see it to believe it event - in the tiny attic rooms that comprised John Logie Baird's laboratory which was in a fairly nondescript London street.     Summary: The information density of professional-level training is often too high and, therefore, not conducive to learning. To create highly effective learning, we must define realistic expectations, start with the simplest possible framework, and progress slowly. Imagine that you’re at a typical conference.     Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) is one of the most potent greenhouse gases in use today, with a global warming potential approximately 24,300 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO₂) over a 100-year period.   • Building over a working railway: Visit to Paris Austerlitz T6B construction site

    For over 30 years, investment has flowed into urban regeneration of the River Seine south bank (“rive gauche”) in eastern Paris. Most visible is the iconic Bibliothèque François Mitterrand (French national library) constructed in 1995 right on the riverside. Running just behind this building and parallel with the river is the railway approach to the Austerlitz main line train station.   • Alternative routes to becoming a chartered engineer

    Many of our members have taken the traditional route to becoming a Chartered Engineer, taking an engineering degree and/or gaining experience by working in the profession. However, there are other routes to becoming a professional engineer. Apprenticeships have been around in Britain since the Middle Ages, when a family would enter into a contract with a master craftsman or tradesman, binding a youth for five to nine years. Sometimes this involved paying a fee. Over the centuries industry bodies and governments have introduced measures to improve the rights of apprentices and to offer support to businesses wanting to take on apprentices. Military Service conscription in the 1900s drastically reduced the number of apprentices, but it wasn’t until 1964 that Industrial Training Boards were…

  • Payloads of the Past: Gemini 7/6A – Rendezvous Above the Earth

    December 4 th is a fabulous day, and not because it my birthday. Back in 1965 a historic event occurred, one that in today’s Space and Satellite growth, has significant relevance. Gemini 7 lifted off from Cape Kennedy carrying Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, who would later become famous for his command on Apollo 13, embarked on what would become a nearly 14‑day mission, the longest U.S. crewed flight to that point. Officially a medical and long‑duration test flight, Gemini 7 had a secondary task, to serve as the passive target for Gemini 6A, flown by Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford, which launched on December 15 th , and executed the first true crewed orbital rendezvous, closing to within about 1ft of its sister spacecraft.
