  • Students compete in IET Brunei Faraday's Challenge

    THIRTY-six Year 9 students representing six schools participated in the preliminary rounds for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Faraday Do-It-Yourself Challenge recently at KB Sentral Shopping Centre. St John’s School, Chung Hua Middle School (Kuala Belait), International School Brunei, St George’s School, Muda Hashim Secondary School and Sayyidina Ali Secondary School sent in the participants. The winners were Chung Hua Middle School, St George’s School and St John’s School. They received BND200 per team as well as certificates. Presenting the prizes was Lieutenant Colonel (U) Schufin bin Haji Brahim, the IET Brunei Darussalam Honorary Chairman for 2017-2018 Session. In this workshop, we were to discover what project and mentor we were to be assigned to. As one of the few non-engineers in the programme, I had my fingers crossed for the mentor and data scientist, Ashleigh Ballantyne (the only non-engineer mentor).     A more diverse workforce can make companies more profitable. But there’s still a lot to do to make it happen.  There has been a lot of commentary about the lack of women in STEM generally and in engineering particularly – but I want to look at the root causes.  Firstly, we know there is a demand for more female engineers. We know that the UK engineering sector has a skills shortage, leading to a huge talent crunch which will inevitably affect the delivery of projects worth billions of pounds. So we know we need more skilled engineers.  We also know that by not attracting workers from 50% of the population can only be detrimental – not just to companies, but to the wider community.  So what are the reasons for this?     Ultra Electronics Precision Control Systems based at the Innovation Park in Cambridge, will be starting a Graduate Scheme in 2018.  Beginning in September the scheme will suit individuals with an Electronics or Software background. The 2 year scheme will base them with either the Software or Electronics teams for 6 months and then the following 18 months will see them spend time with other teams/departments to get an idea of how all the teams work together and how the business works as a whole.     TV connect 2018 gave the MMC TPN a chance to show those in the Multimedia industries that there is a home for them at the IET. Read on to see how we used this oppurtunity to inspire and inform others. TV Connect 2018 ran over 3 days starting with an IET led workshop day on Content protection and  4k/UHD/high dynamic range  by Ian Nock and Graham Turner. This gave attendees the chance to see what IET volunteers do and the expertise that lies within the TPN.  For the Following two days the MMC had an exhibition stand at the TV Connect.     MiFID II (Finally a product that has a genuine feature for MiFID II) Rhys Lewis the Director of the NPL Quantum Metrology Institute leads the Time, Quantum & Electromagnetics (TQEM) Division gave a insightful discussion on how quantum technology is currently being used and its expected use in the near future.   • TV Connect is now in full swing!

    On Tuesday the MMC ran two workshops at Savoy Place for TV Connect delegates and today, the first of the two exhibition and conference days, we have been raising the IET and MMC profile at TV Connect.  We have a stand - B52, very easy to remember - so do please come and see us if you are at TV Connect.  Today Ian Nock, who ran one of the workshops, was a panel member during a 'Codec Wars' discussion session, and at lunchtime Ian, Bob Gentry and I set up a around table discussion, which for logistical reasons as much as anything was rather poorly attended.  However Rikki who has been running our stand has found there is a good degree of interest in the IET in general and the MMC in particular, so it will be interesting to see how much post show follow up we get.

    The Active and Passive RF Devices Seminar was held this year on 30th April 2018 in Savoy Place, London The delegates were treated to a full day of speakers discussing a wide variety of topics – if you were there, tell us what was the most interesting thing you learnt during the day! During the breaks we had a poster session and networking – it was great to see so many people discussing the posters with the presenters! The day ended on a high with presentation to Wenzhang Zhang for Best Student Paper! The prize was a laptop, kindly donated by Toshiba UK – well done Wenzhang!   • Cars, Cars And More Cars – Haven’t I Been Here Before?

    A few weeks ago, I experienced a case of deja vu at the Coventry Museum of Transport when I came across their pre-war collection of cars.  Preferring vintage cars (a Bugatti T35 over a Veyron any day for me!) I always seem to gravitate as if on remote control to these vehicles.  I realised of course that I’d been there the previous year when the ARTS TPN held their first ever seminar on ‘Electrification in Motorsports’.
