On this day in (engineering) history… April 8, 2008 - The world's first skyscraper to integrate wind turbines is completed in Bahrain A warm spring day in Manama – capital city of the island state of Bahrain, 2008. It fits snuggly between the northeast coast of Saudi Arabia and the west coast of Qatar, off the southern shores of the Persian Gulf. The country was a sleepy but strategically important backwater before the oil boom. Bahrain has long attempted to diversify its economy to avoid overreliance on the thick, gooey black stuff – moving into banking and financial services.
