Humans Of The IET WA YP - Victor Olet

Last week we met Nick , Murdoch's student representative. Keeping with our theme of Open Day MVPs this week I'd like to introduce Victor Olet, our Curtin student representative, founder of Curtin IET On Campus and the incumbent chairperson. At the Curtin Open Day, he organised our stall and had members of IET On Campus helping out while he did engineering outreach for Curtin. Victor is a Chemical Engineering student at Curtin University who joined the IET through the 2016 IET YP Leadership Programme. Technical vist on 4th August 2017 IET members, On campus group members from Politeknik Brunei and University Technology Brunei as well as some non members visited the Sinar Suria Bio-Center, MC Biotech Sdn Bhd on the 4th August 2017. Participants had the opportunity to view the first class facility for the production of large scale cultivation of the Microalgae Haematococcus pluvialias. The facility was completed in mid-2016 and concentrates on cultivation, drying and packaging of the dried algae biomass after which they are exported to Japan for extraction and further processing. The target product extracted from the Microalgae called Astaxanthin, a beta-carotenoid (same family as Vitamin A). It is one of the strongest anti-oxidants in the market and gained international acclaim after being…

National Initiative For Cyber Education (NICE)

The NICE framework being introduced by nist.gov is pragmatic in its approach and offers understandings that can be adopted by any organisation. Specifically, it lets you identify what cyber designations are applicable to your organisation and which specific combination of academic, certifications and apprenticeship models are applicable to your company. Current cyber qualifications are limited and somewhat restricted as they are based off TCP/IP technology ecosystems, the NICE framework, goes one step further and allows you to move beyond the client/server architecture to identify what combinations of any cyber activities will be applicable to your needs. It lets you make qualitative and quantitative cyber assessments without any bias. Its framework uses a common body of knowledge (CBK)…

10 Products Made Obsolete by IoT

IoT Evolution World recently posted this article about everyday objects that they believe will be obsolete by Internet of Things. http://www.iotevolutionworld.com.convey.pro/l/7BQZr20 They make some interesting points – they are probably spot on with number 10: paper documents , which have already decreased dramatically over the last few years. However I’m not so sure about some of the other items. For number 1 Physical Payment Methods , we have seen a real decreased in physical money, however for small amounts and in an emergency they still play a role in society – besides what will the tooth fairy leave under the pillows of children?! On a more serious note there are ‘Orwelian’ privacy worries with virtual money, which could prevent physical cash being made completely obsolete. Number 3…

The West Cumbria Network volunteers recently organised a visit to the M-Sport facility. Here is a report from Joseph Dabrera, the West Cumbria Convenor. "The visit to MSport was excellent and the high standard maintained by M-Sport staff has much to do with their success in motor sports. The owner Malcolm Wilson is a man of vision and persistence in that he was able to select the premises and secure funding for such a privately owned business which has had considerable success in motor sports. IET Volunteers Flying High At Royal Air Tattoo 2017 Fairford

Earlier in July, some of the Aerospace TPN volunteers linked up with colleagues in the IET Swindon Local Network who host a stand each year at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. In addition to the IET volunteers there was also support on the stand from a number of partner organisations i.e. Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (DSTL), The British Gliding Association, @Bristol Science Museum, Hybrid Air Vehicles (Airlander), Aquila (Bird Flight Simulator) and the STEM Ambassador Program. The IET stand was the biggest and best that has so far been provided at the tattoo. Or perhaps you’ve been put off applying for any professional registration status because you’ve heard it takes too long or you think you need a specific qualification? We’ve come across a few misunderstandings in our time, so we have decided to set the record straight and disprove some of those crazy professional registration myths. Myth: You need to have a degree-level education to achieve Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or CEng. Truth: Applications for professional registration are competence-based and whilst a bachelor or master’s degree is a good way to demonstrate competences it is not the only way. This can also be done through further learning. Myth: Only IET accredited degrees count towards IEng or CEng. Truth…
