The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas this week with the usual offering of brilliant, gimmicky and downright crazy gadgets on display. The conference wasn’t an entirely successful one this year – rare rainfall caused black outs and there were a few tech fails including the LG robot failing to respond to the CEO’s demands but as usual there were some entertaining IoT products to come out of the event. You can now submit your 2017 CPD record via Career Manager ! During the review year of 2018 we will be reviewing a sample of members’ CPD activities which took place in 2017. If selected, we will notify you and request your records (If you’ve already sent us your records, of course, we will just let you know that are reviewing them). We will then carry out the review and send you our comments. Once your record has been submitted you will have access to our CPD “dashboard” - even if you are not selected for review. The dashboard is a series of graphs allowing to see how your CPD statistics compare with those of your peers. This is a “live” service and so will change as more CPD records are added to the system. I did a series of lectures on Climate Change, ending at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where a group of eager young students quizzed me on many aspects of environmental management. Though NZ contributes little to greenhouse gas emissions, the attendees were passionate about the climate and maknind's impact upon it. In 2012, I had the opportunity to research emerging strategic changes within the Chip Industry. At the time, ARM was the new entrant gaining mass adoption based off their chipset design - which compared to Intel was better at energy saving during operational tasks, where, Intel remained strong in its ability to provide solid computing power. Since then, there have been many new Chip Set entrants into the market that have used economies of scale to provide both, low power consumption rate and strong computing power. As we move into the world of SMART devices, the interactions between chipset and its OS’s will be effected and so it is of no surprise that security was seen less of a priority than chipset performance i.e. moores law. The 10th Public seminar on Project Management Practices in the Caribbean ' held on December 09, 2017 at UWI, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago was a huge success!!! There were approximately over 130 persons in attendance. The event was well organized and the presentations were top class. The IET TTLN wishes to thank Prof. Kit Fai Pun of UWI for organising such an excellent event. The IET TTLN looks forward to collobarating with UWI and all other professional networks in Trinidad and Tobago in holding such events in 2018 and beyond. My January blog post last year, highlighted that different fields of technology will be coming together to create specific SME based commodity services, and with that, how specific field based devices will help drive the concept of technology-as-a-commodity. So, for 2018, the theme of field devices will continue, with specific interests on how smart devices are transitioning into Smart SME commodity ecosystems - maybe this is the year that next-gen technology becomes the norm. The 4th Smart Display research group Meeting (SDM) of the IIEEJ was held in the Science and Engineering School, Waseda University, on 16th December 2017, under the chairmanship of Dr. M. Known for creating magical shows, Mark Ager, CEO of Stage Technologies, talked through how the revolving stage was created for the Cirque Du Soliel's production KA. The interactions of the gantry crane was talked about how each revision allowed better fluidity to manage the revolving stage. The stage itself, known as the Sand Cliff Deck, has 80 steel pegs that shoot out when required by the performers allowing them to flip around the revolving stage to give gravity defying performances. The stage moves in ft/seconds, uses pistons, pumps and hydraulic cylinders that when combined brings the stage to life. Almost 10 similar stages are used throughout the perfomance.
