    The 10th LAPC took place on 10-11 November 2014 and it was a pleasure to attend and represent the IET's Antennas & Propagation Technical and Professional Network. For those who have never been, LAPC is a single stream, two day conference in Loughborough and attracts around 200-215 delegates each year. View the programme .   • Hybrid Electrically Powered Aircraft

    The Aerospace TPN recently organised an evening seminar on the above hot topic at Rolls Royce Derby. There were three speakers - Peter Malkin from Cranfield University, Lorenzo Raffelli and Mark Husband from Rolls Royce. Peter gave a general overview on the topic, Lorenzo and Mark covered an overview of the Distributed Electrical Aircraft Propulsion (DEAP) and further technical aspects of the project. A number of interesting points were mentioned during the presentations: Tube/wing aircraft along with gas turbines are coming to the end of their development cycle. Market drivers for DEAP – growth to exceed 5% pa independent of GDP growth, number of aircraft has to double every 14 years, plus environmental issues such as jet fuel costs, noise, emissions. New radical technology is needed to address…

  • Railway Lecture And Dinner 2014

    Carolyn Griffiths, Chief Inspector, RAIB was the guest speaker at the IET Railway Lecture and Dinner in October 2014. The evening was Chaired by George Clark and Joe Silmon gave the vote of thanks. George and Joe are both members of the Railway TPN Executive Committee. During an interesting and informative presentation, the following points were made in relation to the RAIB: Operational from 2005 when they were set up as a result of an inquiry in the Ladbroke Grove accident Sole purpose is to improve safety on the railways Independent of all parts of the railway industry Cover passenger, metro, heritage, freight and channel tunnel trains 26 staff located in two offices in Derby and Farnborough Deployed to 436 incidents Over 90% of their recommendations are accepted or implemented.   • Rally Car Racing With A Difference!

    Here's a rally car competition that makes a change from the usual environment. Twenty teams are currently taking part in the Solar Atacama Rally in Chile which covers a distance of 870 miles through a desert where the solar radiation levels are amongst the highest in the world. The competitors race on the paved roads rather than closed off sections or special areas of the desert. With a top speed of 87mph/140km/h the cars still have to comply with the Chilean speed limit.     On 29 and 30 October, the RF & Microwave TPN ran two seminars; RF Active & Passive components and 5G Technology – the future of mobile and wireless communications technology . During the TPN committee’s summer meeting they established that there was some potential overlap in the audience and should therefore run the seminars together in order to boost delegates numbers and networking opportunities. It also saved volunteer time and expenses by requiring them to travel just once. Active & Passive components The RF Active & Passive components seminar attracted around 40 delegates who watched 9 presentations showcasing the latest research from industry and academia.   • Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping

    Executive Member, Lim Yew Kee was invited by Associate Professor Dr. ML Dennis Wong, Dean Faculty of Engineering, Computer& Science, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, to deliver a technical talk entitled “Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping”, on 22nd October 2014, to its engineering staffs and students. There were 33 participants (21 IET members). In this seminar, through manufacturing engineering and processes, he shared his knowledge in product design and development, electro-pneumatic and hydraulic control systems for manufacturing plant and facilities. He then continued to further elaborate on Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Processes in product development progress that can be enhanced.     Dr. Arvind Kumar presents a talk on Nuclear Engineering Applications – 18 October, 2014 Professor Dr. Arvind Kumar presented his views and thoughts on Nuclear engineering applications to an audience of IET members and other invited scientists and engineers. The talk covered a wide spectrum of applications in the diverse areas of nuclear power, naval propulsion, nuclear medicine, national security, space exploration, and industrial applications such as measurement of fluid levels in sealed systems, neutron radiography of explosives, oil well logging, etc. While focusing on the engineering aspects, Prof Kumar also addressed some of the safety concerns that are attributed to any mention of nuclear power.   • Metrolink's Second City Crossing gets underway

    Transport for Greater Manchester have now started construction on the Metrolink Second City Crossing which will transform light rail traffic through the city centre. Trams could be running between Victoria and a new stop in Exchange Square as early as winter 2015-16, ahead of the crossing project being completed by 2017.   • Is it a bird, is it a plane? No its an Amazon drone

    Amazon has recently announced that it is now planning to step up its Unmanned Delivery aircraft in the UK, by looking for engineers/project managers to test its aircraft. The IET Aerospace TPN Vice Chairman, Lambert Dopping Hepenstall has recently contributed to this article on the Amazon drone programme and said "We are very likely to see a lot of progress in this area over the next decade. However, there are many challenges to overcome. Top of the list is the need to mature the technologies and demonstrate to the regulators that unmanned aircraft can operate safely in our airspace".   • About Us - the South Yorkshire Network

    The South Yorkshire Network organises a programme of technical meetings, visits, colloquia, learned society and social events to meet the needs of the Institution members residing within, or close to, its boundary. These activities are normally open to members of other professional bodies and the general public. The Network provides a local face of the IET through a main committee of active volunteers with support from full time IET staff. We have a YP committee who, together with the main committee, plan and deliver our events programme. Also covering parts of North Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire, the Network serves the following major centres: Sheffield, Rotherham, Mexborough, Doncaster, Barnsley, Worksop, Retford, Chesterfield, The Hope Valley and Bakewell.

  • Philae robot probe lands on Comet 67P

    The European robot probe Philae has made history by making the first landing on a comet after seven hours of descent from the Rosetta spacecraft. The control room at Darmstadt received the signal confirmation that Philae had landed at 1605GMT. Philae is now talking to the control room and images from the surfaces are being processed before being released. The IET Satellite Systems & Applications Network would like to extend their congratulations to everyone who has worked on the project.
