We Want To Hear From You! Nominate An Engineer Or Technologist

We're celebrating the impact of engineers and technologists who have changed the world or are revolutionising it now! We want to know who you think should be recognised on our ultimate list. Find out more...   We want to know who inspires you in STEM! Whether they’re from the past, present, or working on something amazing from the future – we want to you to nominate the incredible engineers who are having or had an impact on the world!  Nominate today We also want to show how truly diverse and incredible the engineering and technology professions are and remove age-old, unrepresentative stereotypes of engineering. You can nominate as many people as you like, from the well-known greats of the past, to perhaps someone who was overlooked or not given the credit they deserved. Alternatively, are…

The IET150 event: Future of transport industry and impact on the engineering profession

Dear members, Thank you so much for your contribution to our 150th-anniversary event.  It was a very informative session, and we got great feedback from the industry participants. I believe they got a great overview of where the industry is heading and align their competencies and hone their skills accordingly.  We will organise a proper 150th-anniversary celebratory event at the State Library venue later in the year and will invite your good self to join us. Hopefully, then most of the population would be vaccinated and have fewer disruptions.  Special thanks to our Guest Speaker and Panelist for being so supportive throughout the planning process.  If you want to relive the webinar, you can watch it via FaceBook Live on IET ANZ Young Professionals Campaign .  https://www.facebook.com/IET…

  • Lucas – A Brief History Of A Great British Company.

Lucas – A Brief History Of A Great British Company.

For over 100 years the Lucas companies evolved and developed in line with the growth in mass mobility, starting with  bicycles and extending into motor cars and aircraft. Despite the usual fluctuations in business performance, overall, Lucas can be considered to have been a successful player in its automotive, aerospace and industrial spheres of activity. In a bid to become a global automotive systems supplier, a merger with Varity precipitated a rapid demise of the company bearing the Lucas brand, although many of its former activities continue today under a multiplicity of successors. The presenter has worked for 50 years with Lucas, its customers and one of its successors and so will add a personal dimension to the history of this great British company.   Howard’s presentation is now available…

  • International Cost Management Standard (ICMS) 3

International Cost Management Standard (ICMS) 3

This third edition of ICMS recognises the criticality of consistently reporting carbon emissions if a disaster caused by global climate change is to be averted. By providing a common reporting framework for capital costs, life cycle costs and carbon emissions, it allows their interrelationship to be explored, and provides the data to make decisions about the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the built environment that optimises environmental sustainability.  In addition to extending the use of ICMS to carbon emissions, the Standard Setting Committee has taken this opportunity to add five new project types: ‘Offshore structures’, ‘Near shore works’, ‘Ports’, ‘Waterway works’ and ‘Land formation and reclamation’ as well as making minor modifications in response to feedback received…

  • Arc Flash Risk Management - A Health And Safety Factfile Provided By The IET.

Arc Flash Risk Management - A Health And Safety Factfile Provided By The IET.

This IET factfile seeks to set out the key principles of arc flash risk management using a risk-based approach. It is aimed at persons with responsibility for the management of safety in the control and implementation of work on electrical power equipment. Have a look and let us know what you think? Any technical questions or points you want to raise, then comment below and we will get to them. The document describes an approach, based on a hierarchy of risk control measures. It adopts a holistic risk management methodology using the 4Ps of Predict, Prevent, Process and Protect to ensure that arc flash hazards are systematically identified, analysed and prevented from causing harm. Removal of the hazard through working only on or near equipment that is made dead and suitably isolated should…

  • Electrical Safety Management, 7 - 9 September 2021

    Electrical Safety Management, 7 - 9 September 2021

According to Ireland’s Health and Safety Authority “In Ireland, there have been 40 electrocutions or deaths from the explosive/burning effects of electricity from 2001 to the end of 2020. Of those, 25 deaths have been associated with a work activity”. It doesn’t seem very many, but one fatality a year represents a loved-one lost, doing their job. Electrical safety in organisations is often the responsibility of non-electrically qualified staff, from facilities managers up to company directors. Is that you? If so, are you confident you know how to manage your organisation’s electrical risk?  This course has helped hundreds of delegates to audit their policies and procedures through the simple approach of the Code of Practice:    "All presenters were engaging. Giving useful and practical examples…

  • Quality Attenuation On Broadband Services (IET Anglian Coastal Local Network).

Quality Attenuation On Broadband Services (IET Anglian Coastal Local Network).

"If customers don't notice the difference, then they won't want pay for more" explained Gavin Young MIEEE FIET, Head of Fixed Access, Centre of Excellence at Vodafone Group Technology at the 'Quality Attenuation and its Impact on Broadband Service Assurance' webinar organised by the IET Anglian Coastal Local Network hosted by Kevin Foster. Gavin, started at the basics, so as packets go through hops, they either get delayed, or get dropped, ideally, we want zero delay and zero loss, however this never happens, and the difference is known as the 'delta' which is degradation from a perfect state. The delta is dependent on variables such as Wi-Fi issues or rerouting or can now even be serverless apps moving around dynamically. For years broadband has been focused on speed. The more speed meant…

  • Cyber Threats Facing Legacy Control Systems (IET Scotland South West Network)

Cyber Threats Facing Legacy Control Systems (IET Scotland South West Network)

"Responsible engineers need to start to promote cyber resilient systems" explained Nathan Dale, Senior Electrical Engineer from Mott MacDonald, at the 'Cyber Threats Facing Legacy Control Systems' webinar presented by the IET Scotland South West Network. He explained that Operational Technology systems are intelligent services that effect change in an environment, in the older days these were enclosed and disconnected from the outside work, now, physically boundaries have changed. Logical boundaries have moved down the stack whilst physically boundaries have moved up - this has been enhanced because of 'remote access' and new ways to move data around. Often, these new methods of interacting with data have come about quick and fast where legacy systems whose hardware or software components could…

  • Publication of Book: The Earthing and Bonding for AC Electrified Railways

Publication of Book: The Earthing and Bonding for AC Electrified Railways

The Background to the Book Many public domain standards and company documents exist to guide the design of the earthing and bonding of AC railway electrification systems but in practice there remains both gaps, overlaps and conflicts between them. Therefore, it is not uncommon for the designs to follow discipline specific scope rather than being holistic in their approach. The complexity of integrating the earthing of a 25kV electrified railway with various electrical distribution systems and exposed conductive parts, means that it is impossible to prescribe one earthing and bonding design solution that addresses the needs of every railway. Therefore, this creates different earthing designs for individual railways.   The Scope of 25kV Railway Earthing and Bonding Requirements This guide aims…

  • John Snow And The Fight Against Cholera

John Snow And The Fight Against Cholera

Presenters: David Moore Synopsis: By the summer of 1831 cholera had become firmly established in the environment of the UK. The effects of this disease was devastating, people were dying in their thousands, there was no know cause and no known cure. Current medical knowledge thought that illness and disease was spread by bad air or miasma. A young apprentice doctor who treated cholera victims did not believed it was caused though bad air, but proving his theory became a challenge to the established medical and scientific beliefs of the time. This is the story of how John Snow changes out understanding of how diseases were spread, and how we could control it. This event clashed with another important event:- a lovely sunny evening. I must admit, I was going to log on, give it five minutes, then…
